Tony McGee On the Redskins NFL Draft/Offseason

Recap of conversation with Tony McGee on the NFL Draft:

Starting with the Redskins first selection and their decision to move up in the NFL draft to select Rocky McIntosh. From a trade perspective, you can only tell in a matter of time if they gave up too much for that pick. The Redskins have a tendency of making these types of moves to make sure that they get their guy. They moved up last year to get Jason Campbell last year, and did so to get Chris Cooley two years ago in a move that I don’t think anyone would question today. So we can only tell in time weather or not it was worth it to move up to get McIntosh. As far as McIntosh himself, a couple of injuries look bad on his college career, but I don’t see that as a big red flag in the NFL. Miami always has good players, and he fills a void left by LaVar Arrington and I could see him competing for time this year. He is also a very smart guy, he was great academically and on the wonderlic, which should help in Williams system.

Looking at the rest of the draft, where it’s pretty much a crapshoot, the best player that I liked was Anthony Montgomery, the defensive tackle out of Minnesota. This was a guy that a lot of teams had rated very high on their draft boards, and the Redskins were lucky to get him where they did. The rest of the picks I think will have to compete for playing time on special teams, but everything is such a crapshoot, that you can never tell this early.

Now the Redskins addressed mainly defense during the draft, and I know some fans are worried that the Redskins don’t have enough depth on the offensive line. The Redskins took care of their starting offense during the first part of the free agency period. You have to remember too, that the June free agency period is coming up. I would be very surprised if the Redskins don’t look for a couple of veterans to sure up depth on the offensive line, and looking into the secondary. The Redskins also really like some of their younger guys in the secondary, and think those guys can make an impact within the system.

Looking at the other teams in our division and how they did in the draft. I think they all had better drafts than the Redskins did, obviously having more to play with than Washington. I think the Redskins, however, did the best job in free agency. I think all the teams have really helped themselves out about equally in the off season. This will be far and away the toughest division in the NFL.

Moving away from the draft, I know some fans are worried about the durability of Clinton Portis, considering the carries he gets and the way he plays the game. Within the next couple of years, I could see him splitting carries a little more than he does now. I still think he will be the number one guy in Washington for a very long time, but the Redskins have very good running backs that can help him reduce the load. I’m a little surprised they didn’t look at Lendall White from USC in the draft, as a change of pace back. I like Betts a lot in the role he is in, but he is a free agent very soon and could be on his way out.

Finally as far as the offense goes, I think the Redskins will have a lot of new packages this year with the addition of the receivers that they got, as well as Al Saunders running the show. The offense will resemble a lot of the offense of the days with “The Posse”.
