Wayne Gretzky was recorded on a wiretap talking to the alleged financier of a gambling ring, discussing how the hockey great's wife could avoid being implicated, a person with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press on Thursday.
Well, that ain't good...I'm sure he'll come out smelling like roses, though.

I'm still in shock over this. Wayne Gretzky is arguably (with little argument) my favorite athlete of all time. He's to me what Jordan is to most kids. Just loved watching him play.
But I really don't know all the details of what's happening exactly. Dropping large amounts of money on games (not NHL), is that really bad if it's legal? Was it legal?
Then I also hear there are money laundering charges. That's the big one.

To be clear - there is no accusation he gambled or knew of the gambling at the time. The accusation is that he attempted to cover it up. The problem, though, is that this is what people get in trouble for all the time (e.g., Bill Clinton, Martha Stewart, etc.). Assuming it's true, it's good that it doesn't appear that he did anything under oath.

I thought I read somewhere that there is some belief that his wife was placing the bets, but on his behalf. Basically to keep his hands clean. If that's the case, damn.

OK - that's news to me. He's definitely in trouble if that's the case. I mean like Pete Rose trouble.

i think the latest read is he called to see if it was possible to keep his wife clean after he found it it was going public...
I'm going to wait on the details to clear up first. The gambling really isn't the issue for me... the money laundering, the mob connections and the possibility of NHL game fixing are the things i'm watching.
