If the extension to the CBA can't get done, then what?

CBA IS "DONE," BUT . . . .



A league source tells us that a deal between the NFL and the NFL Players Association on an extension to the Collective Bargaining Agreement is "done," and that the only thing keeping the thing from being signed and sealed is the absence of a firm arrangement among owners regarding an expansion of revenue sharing.



The only remaining problem is that the new CBA replaces "Defined Gross Revenues" (i.e., the stuff that has been shared by the 32 teams for years) with "Total Football Revenues" (i.e., every penny earned). And if every penny earned, including stuff that isn't currently shared, goes into the formula for determining the salary cap, the problem is that the low-earning teams will see their individual cap numbers influenced by the much bigger money being raked in by other teams.



Stay tuned. It's looking more and more like it's only a matter of time before the owners work this thing out. As they should.

I have to tell you I don't like that other teams that don't work as hard as our owner and team to build more revenue thinks they are owed something more just because! Work harder and build your teams up!!! Don't come a calling with your hands open asking for something that is not yours! I hope the nine team holding out keep to thier guns!!!

i agree we deserve the money but right now we need this done or our 2006 campaign will be painful.

ESPN is reporting that an extension may be reached soon. The story says that Upshaw may allow free agency to be delayed one week if the salary cap extension provided teams with higher salary cap figures for 2006. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2347125

This could be good news. First, we'll have an extension which will allow us to renegotiate deals and covert salaries into signing bonuses. Second, if it pushes the cap figure up, we of course will benefit.

Without an extension of the collective bargaining agreement, this could be one of the bloodiest weeks the NFL has witnessed, with more teams cutting more players at this time of the year than the league ever has seen.

Those numbers will depend on how many players will be willing to restructure their contracts, but one NFL general manager who reviewed Washington's salary-cap situation wondered how the Redskins will even be able to field a team.

For starters, the Redskins are expected to release defensive backs Matt Bowen (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/187497) and Walt Harris (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/3594), defensive linemen Renaldo Wynn (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/4580) and Brandon Noble (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/4024), wide receivers James Thrash (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/1859) and Taylor Jacobs (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/395990), center Cory Raymer (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/4136), and kicker John Hall (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/1705). Even with all those moves, the Redskins still will be significantly over the salary cap, requiring them to release even more players from their roster.

No team is rooting for a CBA extension any harder than Washington. Otherwise, the Redskins team next weekend will be considerably different from the one they have this weekend.

ARMS TRADE



Not all the Redskins moves will be cuts. At least one will be a trade.

The Redskins also are expected to trade quarterback Patrick Ramsey (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/302216) this week. At least three teams have expressed a serious interest, and one should be able to put together an enticing enough package to lure away a player the Redskins once drafted in the first round.

The Redskins are not expected to get a whole lot in return for Ramsey, due to the fact that there are so many quarterbacks expected to be on the free-agent market. But they will get something for a team that soon could have many holes.
