I'm throwing in the towel and calling a local computer repair guy today. Usually I can handle minor issues but this is obviously getting out of control.

Let's try one thing real quick. What model is it?

Dell Dimension 2400

I've already tried multiple driver sets, and I used the recovery disks that came with the computer.

OK, one more thing. Look on the back of it and see if where you plug the sound card is like built into the motherboard or if it's in one of those slots more towards the bottom of the tower.

It's at the bottom on the right hand side as I'm looking at the back of the tower.

I'm pretty sure its onboard, TMC. Dell likes for everything to be on the board.

http://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R91928.EXE

OK, install that and see if the yellow question mark goes away. It sounds like you have a PCI Sound Blaster installed.

True, but I just saw on the website when I was looking for drivers that his particular model had Soundblaster options.

I've got Soundblaster 5.1 if that means anything
