Winskins 11-01-2006, 01:12 AM Skins faithful seem to make Taylor out to be a football god, which he isn't. To be honest he is good at best and far from amazing.
He is no football god. I have seen Taylor make some big time mistakes this year, but he is pretty amazing. He has amazing game speed and he makes the wide receivers afraid to run routes over the middle.
Also, have you seen him force a fumble. He has a special type of awareness where he can make a solid tackle, plus rip out the ball at the same time. I have witnessed that at least twice this season.
Finally, I have seen him cover Randy Moss, TO, Jeremy Shockey, and various others in one-on-one situations and hold his own. In fact, I distinctly remember him completely jumping OVER Jeremy Shockey to break up a pass. He also tackled Randy Moss, who was bobbling a ball in the air, and never took his eyes off the ball. Taylor made a great tackle while watching and batting the ball away.

I guess we have different take on what constitutes amazing. If you look at all the mistakes he makes he falls short of amazing. I mean, Roy Williams of the Cowboys makes plays quite a bit and I don't hear anyone in here calling him amazing.
Barry Sanders is amazing, Taylor is not...not yet anyways :)
dmek25 11-01-2006, 06:28 AM i hope he doesnt end up like lavar, with people knowing he has the physical ability. that ability. just not translating to sucess on the field. i know me, personally, have expected bigger and better things out of sean taylor. right now he is just a good nfl player
With the state of our D, Taylor and Arch were having to cover way to much. Last time I looked, they were the leading tacklers on the team................that's a problem
redskins5044 11-01-2006, 07:41 AM taylor hasnt been able to make the bug plays this year. there is a reason behind this he is playing with archelta both are the hard hitting types of safteys. taylor has speed but i think u can use him better with more of a cover safety back there with him like a ryan clark from last year
illdefined 11-01-2006, 08:05 AM The end of this article might help explain some of Taylor's difficulties this year: Redskins Pay Price For Moves - washingtonpost.com (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/28/AR2006102800572.html)
here:
"By signing Archuleta, the Redskins decided that last year's starter at his position, Clark, was expendable. Clark's departure for the Steelers has left a void in the locker room, Redskins players say, and has particularly affected safety Sean Taylor, whose play has faltered this season.
Taylor has had considerable off-field issues since being drafted in 2004 -- including arrests for DUI and felony gun charges (he was convicted of neither) -- and Clark, a devoted family man, was said to be a positive influence.
Taylor would often eat at his house and play video games with Clark's children, team sources said. On the field, Clark had mastered the defense and would talk constantly with Taylor, aligning him, shouting directions, helping him anticipate the next play.
At least two veterans have called Clark this season for suggestions on how to reach Taylor, team sources said, and believe Taylor's problems in coverage and making in-game adjustments are directly related to Clark's departure.
"When you have a guy that's a little bit distant or introverted, sometimes it only takes one out of 53 guys to reach him," said one veteran Redskin, asking that his name not be used. "Ryan was that guy for Sean, and it's a big loss. Now Sean is trying to teach Adam and help him along, but that's not who he is. He's a guy you just need to get pointed in the right direction on the field, make sure he knows his assignment and let him go after the ball."
Clark's agent, Joel Turner, said that had the Redskins offered something close to Pittsburgh's deal -- $7 million over four years with $1.65 million guaranteed -- at any point in the 2005 season, Clark would have remained in Washington. Keeping Clark at that rate also would have given the team additional money under the salary cap to add a top place kicker or linebacker."
Tragic. absolutely tragic.
and people here still disparage Clark while he was here, except for one stiffarm, everything said about Ryan Clark was positive last year..
SouperMeister 11-01-2006, 09:32 AM Give Sean Taylor the front seven playing in front of Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu, or Roy Williams, and he would be the best safety in football by a wide margin. And remember, Taylor is only 23 years old - he has many great years ahead of him and his contract is very cap friendly after this season. If our front office has a clue, he should be signed to an extension before his current contract expires, because he will command HUGE dollars on the free agent market. The ridiculous contract we gave Archuleta ensures that.
htownskinfan 11-01-2006, 09:47 AM I only watched about half of it and noticed taylor getting to the qb on 2 blitzes, has he done that this yr? he needs to,were not getting much pressure anywhere else

The problem blitzing Taylor is that it leaves Archeleta as our last line of defense downfield - a very scary thought. One of the long TD passes the Jags got a few weeks back came on a Taylor blitz. I prefer him patroling the middle and scaring the hell out of opposing WRs. The only defensive highlights of the first Dallas game was T.O.'s obvious fear of #21. Taylor's amazing forced fumble of Julius Jones was pretty sweet as well.

Thos thiings were good, but not AMAZING. Taylor doesnt make good plays on the ball. He plays like a linebacker, not a safety, maybe we should move him up. I think we need more speed and quickness at safety, while we need more aggressiveness at the OLB spot. Taylor is a terrific tackler, but doesnt read the ball in the air that well, and he is known to bite on qb fakes. He's the franchise right now, with portis.
