i'd probably be following it more if uva hadn't lost in the qualifying round i think it was. college baseball is just so different from real baseball that it's just not that fun to watch. i'd much rather watch the womens softball finals. anyone know why the college guys use metal bats instead of wooden ones?

It's all about the *ping*.
Actually, it's probably to put greater pop on the ball. The NCAA guys can't swing the bats as fast as MLB players (supposedly), so its safe for them to use metal bats. When I played in high school, -5 (weight = length - 5) were legal, but they have since been deemed dangerous and the rules have gone to -3 bats. If Barry Bonds were to use a metal bat, he could hit the ball 1/4 mile.
the lighter the bat = the faster you can swing it = the faster the ball leaves the bat
This is directly related to the amount of time a pitcher has to react to a ball coming at him and to how far the ball goes.
