what are gmail invites for, is the service not available yet so this is for people to test it or what?

its for a 1gb e-mail account from google (and the service really is super nice ;))

and to get one, you need an invitation from a current user, or you can buy on off ebay pretty cheap...

I knew what it was, I didnt know you had to have an invitation to use it though, thats weird.

it's still in the beta stage right now, that's the reason for the invitations

Yeah, they're slowly expanding it to include more and more customers. I've still got some invites left...
