Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested? (rumor)MTK 02-15-2007, 09:29 AM The main problem with this deal as it is outlined is dropping down to #25 is too far of a drop and using the NFL points chart it doesn't add up. The Jets would definitely have to sweeten the deal a bit more. Beemnseven 02-15-2007, 09:32 AM After reading the rest of the posts, I'm genuinely surprised at the number of people who would accept this deal. Betts for a 2nd or a 3rd is fine. Betts straight up for Vilma is fine. But losing the #6 pick? NO WAY. That pick is gold. MTK 02-15-2007, 09:35 AM I would take the deal if the Jets sweetened the deal with another quality pick. gabe1984 02-15-2007, 09:38 AM Unless we think that we can get another solid DT or DE with a later pick in the first round, or with a high second round pick, I really think we need to keep the 6th pick to address the DL. If we get a solid defensive lineman, then I think whoever is playing linebacker will be better. In fact, I still believe that Lemar Marshall can produce for us if his shoulder injury isn't nagging him all season. He had a good season for us in 2005, and I believe he can return to that form next season, especially if we can get a guy like Branch to clog up some holes. In addition, although Vilma is attractive, I do not think we should go after him for the reasons I just stated. However, I also do not think that we should go after him because we're getting rid of a guy who WANTS to be a Redskin. Ladell knew that he could leave the Skins and go start for another team, but he is choosing to stay with us. He's passing up a big pay day for back up money, cause he wants to be a part of this team. After the season that he had last year, I think trading him will cause more friction between the front office/coaching staff and the players. Portis always speaks so highly of Betts, and while Vilma is a stud, I think it's more important that we start showing the rest of the team that we're willing to take care of our own, and award them when they play well. SkinEmAll 02-15-2007, 09:39 AM :stop: SkinEmAll 02-15-2007, 09:45 AM hmmm. Im kind of in the RB and LB are a dime a dozen camp unless they are unreal beasts aka, Tomlinson, Urlacher, Lewis. The best thing about Betts aside from his ability is the fact that his agent is a complete moron and got him locked into a team friendly deal right before he could have seen a huge payday. He really does solidify the RB position at back up money for years to come. You would have to pay a player like Vilma a ton. Moreover, I am starting to think that the biggest problem we have been having with the big contracts is actually the ego/motivation impact they seem to have on the team. Given that we are impervious to salary cap hell, but tend to stink on gameday, I think compiling more players with Betts like skill and salary could be a blueprint for success. We could use more solid if unspectacular players, at a resonable and more importantly ego dampening price. You pay the big bucks ONLY to the team leaders and the superathletes who are the CORE of the team. Overpay for those guys if you have to. The other guys look up to them and respect them, but know their place on the team. If they want too much, they are replaced. Because of the fact that there seems to be no method to our compensation packages, (coaches included), it seems to affect the chain of command of the entire organization. Who is in charge? Who do I HAVE to listen to. Who are THE core players? Who is the REAL head coach. Honestly, come to think of it, I think that the main reason we were all so excited when Joe Gibbs came back was because we imagined that he would bring a very clear sense of leadership and direction to the team. It may well be that his major failing has been in this regard since his return. With JG, GW and Al Saunders, we are dealing with a three headed monster in terms of leadership and direction. That seems to flow down to the players and is compounded by the overspending. The core players should get the money, and the team should scheme around there particular strengths. On the same token, the coaching staff should have a clear outline of who is in charge. It is one thing to say Joe Gibbs is in charge, another thing entirely to know he is. I think that Joe hopefully already has this figured out. It seems that he took control of the team late last season by reaserting his coaching philosophy that we would be a running, smashmouth football team. Unfortunately, it was already too late to save the season. However, I believe that both GW and Saunders got put back in there place and now the team might have a clear understanding of what they are expected to be: a Joe Gibbs football team. With that in mind, Betts is a more than servicable starter and a very strong role player/backup with a good contract who fits the mold of a power running team. That much we know. Is Vilma one of THE two or three guys you plan to build your entire defense around? A trade like that is only worth it if your answer is yes, because you will have to pay him like a top two or three defender. The same goes for the number six pick. Is the player we draft there going to be one of those two or three guys that makes huge money and is a cornerstone of the franchise? To me, if none of those defenders fits that mold, you either trade down in hopes of landing more solid Betts type players which every good team needs, or you use the pick as leverage to get a guy like Vilma or whoever else you have decided to build around. Betts wanted to be here, thats why HE agreed to the deal. MTK 02-15-2007, 09:49 AM Betts wanted to be here, thats why HE agreed to the deal. I also wouldn't be surprised if he re-signed with a handshake agreement that the team would still consider offers for him if it meant a shot at a starting job. SkinEmAll 02-15-2007, 09:59 AM This is all I am saying... 1) Trade Betts while his value is high. We need to shop him now while his value is still high, and before everyone else finds out that he has a pnechant for fumbling. We could Easily get a 3nd rounder, and, if the climate is right around draft time, we could potentially work out a deal for a 2nd rounder. *yeah your right, no other gm's or head coaches would do a little research or film review before making an offer on a player. 2) Get a corner/fs somewhere in the draft. We tanked on getting a corner last year when we passed on Jimmy Williams to get Rocky McIntosh. So we desperately need to address that position via the draft, and NOT free agency. We keep signing these guys who seem to lose the will to work after they sign the big contracts. 3) The story is 100% non-fabricated. I was there, and so was George Michael. I could have used a host of scenarios to make the story sound sweeter, but I told it as it was. Truthful. And don't ever question the man who runs the Sports Machine and Redskins Report! He is the De Facto sports information icon of anything Burgundy and Gold since 1984. * huh? 4) I don't think that we should take the Jets deal at all. The story was merely a way to show the potential value of LBetts as trade material in the "real world" of NFL GM cirlces. This is only ONE example of many RB hungry teams that could be salivating at a RB that has been a backup to start for them. Who knows his value may go up around draft time. But, we need to use that 6th pick on the best DE available, or trade down to acquire more picks. Which bring me to my 5th point... 5) We need more picks and bad! I dont think anyone realzies that we have 1 pick in the entire first day of the draft. So, if we dont get anymore picks, then we will have to go home or turn on the ps3 after the sixth pick in the first day. If not, you will be forced to watch and think about how a "Jonnie Doe" would have done for us in the rounds 2-4, where we gave up draft picks for players. *This is The Warpath, Redskins discussion for the Knowledgeable Fan. 6) We need to abandon this philosophy of trading draft picks for players! Its the reason we didnt have a first and 3rd last year, and its the reason why we dont have a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th this year. It never works, either way we have a high cap hit and a player who never really lives up to expectation. The inverse is needed to stop the bleeding. So trade players for draft picks. Its so crazy it just might work. * we have a few who have. 7) Stay with the system. Every year teams like the Patriots, Ravens, and Chargers get better and deeper as a team thru the draft. We don't grow simply, because we don't draft. 8) Cut Brunell, Wynn, restructure Archuleta's contract(or restructure and trade him to Chicago to reunite with Lovie SMith), keep Shawn Springs, and maybe get a corner after the draft when teams release players to sign draft picks. Im not sold on clements or any other free agent CB. 9) Lastly, we need to go with the best end in the 1st round. I would say take a corner here, but none are worthy of being taken this high in this draft class. Trade for a 2nd or 3rd rounder to get the best CB/FS available. A plus would be to get someone who could play both (like Jimmy Williams...no, I wont stop bringing it up). In the 5th, 6th, and 7th go after DT, LB, RB(if we trade BEtts), DE(pass rush specialist-a la Mark Anderson of the Bears if we don't trade betts), and WR(if we could find a Marques Colston, Donald Driver, or Mike Furrey steal in the late round could help make WR more competitive behind Moss). Plus we need a receiver over 6' tall!! Im 6'2", do u think I can get a try out? lol Seriously, if we dont make moves we will have essentially the same team depth wise as last year. I dont want to have one draft pick for the first day, so make moves and build the team for the real test - who will run things when Gibbs is gone? Its 2 years away, we need to look forward to building an inexpensive, productive, proactive base of talent for when he is gone. So that we dont end up at square one again. Any trade involving Betts will never happen. Maybe Georgey boy had just finished his first bottle of scotch and was just yanking your chain. diehardskin2982 02-15-2007, 10:36 AM I can see this trade occuring if we also get our original 2nd rounder back GTripp0012 02-15-2007, 04:49 PM Unless we think that we can get another solid DT or DE with a later pick in the first round, or with a high second round pick, I really think we need to keep the 6th pick to address the DL. As much as I like Vilma, the DL is more important, and to upgrade it, we really need a top 12 pick. |
