RMSkins 03-17-2007, 02:14 PM Why do you guys think Smoot would not be our #1? Smoot, right now, is our best CB. To me, that makes him our #1. I'm not calling Rogers a bust, he's just not lived up to his potential, and our expectations which were high. He's still a good cb, but when you throw in Springs and Smoot, that makes Rogers our 3rd best cb. This is not to say that Rogers sucks. Many teams wish they had a 3rd CB with Rogers talent.
Yes, he was OK his rookie season. Last year he was not the #1 until injuries put him there. He wanted the #1 role if you recall, and he sucked hard, being "thrusted" there is not the point, he proved he can't handle the pressure. It wasn't until the end of the season when they changed up his role that he did ok again. Our defense wasn't poor all season, our secondary was poor, it was poor because of Rogers not playing well, and getting no safety help. This hurt the overall D like dominoes. But it started with the secondary.
I'm sorry, but Smoot is not our best CB. Our best CB is Springs, Smoot has proved he cannot handle the #1 CB spot from his days in Minnesota, what makes you think he is going to be a good #1 here?
Pocket$ $traight 03-17-2007, 02:18 PM Since we do not have Bly, and I am thinking we won't, I think it will be Smoot #1, Springs #2, and Rogers #3.
If anyone was watching last year, they would have noticed that Rogers does not have the stuff to be a #1 or a #2. Smoot is twice as good as Rogers. Springs has great talent, but is getting old. He can't be a #1 anymore. The 3 combined make a great trio though.
I do fully beleive that Springs would make a great safety assuming we find a viable CB to take his place, but that's a big if. We don't need a run stopper out of that spot, we need a cover guy. We have new blood in Fletcher to help sure up the LB's and help stop the run. What would help us stop the run even better is a DE. The fact that anyone here thinks we need anything out of the draft (minus maybe a guard) other than a DE is smoking crack. We need a pass rusher to help keep the offenses honest and will help our run stoppers.
If we get Bly, you'll find me over in the corner all giddy. Imagine Bly, Smoot, Rogers and Springs (safety or not) then getting one of those top notch DE's in the draft. I would guarantee we would get back to a top 10 defense. I can see our offense hitting top 10 as well, and if both are top ten, well ladies and gentlemen, that equals the playoffs.
Smoot is twice as good as Rogers? Rogers is a better tackler, faster and no worse in coverage. The only clear advantage that I see with Smoot is that he has better hands.

the defense wa indeed bad all year, they were bad in preseason and it carried over to the regular season. rogers was the #1 in the first game of the season. springs didn't play until week 4 or something like that and then rogers was once again the #1 when springs went out again a few weeks later. rogers was not ready to be the #1 cb and still probably isn't ready. smoot will tell everyone that he is ready for it but his play has never convinced me he's any better than a #2 cb. imo, springs should be the #1 cb. if you think smoot is a better cover corner then springs then your crazy. if the skins get rid of springs and bring in bly, then bly should be the #1 cb. once again i say smoot will have to battle rogers for the #2 cb spot.

My main argument is Smoot over Rogers. Springs was one of the best CB's I've seen in years. He has a ton of talent, but he's getting older and more fragile, I'm ok with Springs starting the season #1, he's earned it, btu what happens when he goes down? Smoot is a viable #1 CB. He did well in Minnesota, not great, but well, but he was also the only real option they had.
I guess I am the only guy that remembers Rogers going down in flames last year.

100% disagree.

rogers did go down in flames but so did everyone on that defense, rogers gets no more of the blame then anyone else, imo. smoot could turn out to be the #1 cb. if smoot beats out rogers for the #2 and springs goes down with an injury then smoot could be #1 and rogers #2. i don't like the sound of that but it could happen.
Pocket$ $traight 03-17-2007, 03:06 PM 100% disagree.
Look up the Youtube highlights of Smoot "covering" Steve Smith. No receiver has ever done that to Rogers.
Disagree with that?
rvd420 03-17-2007, 04:07 PM dont be suprised if we still end up with bly.

Why would anyone be surprised? About a dozen media sites have reported that he wants to come here and we have actively been looking to trade with Denver.
EARTHQUAKE2689 03-17-2007, 05:09 PM We need to get a FS with great range, tackling skills, and play-making ability to help aid our secondary. keep springs at corner.
Draft Eric Weddle from Utah!!
or Laron Landry from LSU just a thought
