None of the files are hosted on the sites. Technically it's a legal loophole... since they're hosting just "links" to the files themselves... they're not doing anything illegal.

They make sure you know that you're leaving the website once your clicking on the link, and that they're just providing access to information, but not actually hosting it.

Most of the links will be hosted in Switzerland, South Korea, Taiwan, etc. where the laws don't forbid hosting of copyrighted material.

You've got pretty much every episode of the office, scrubs, family guy, Simpsons, you name it. It's also got a rapidly growing list of movies.

In January 2007, Fox and Paramount threatened the site owners to sue them and the company that hosted their server to if they didn't take down links to their specific content. In fear of lawsuits and having their site taken down, the site owners removed the requested series and adhered to proposal not to host the mentioned items.

Alluc claims in it's disclaimer/imprint[2] that it is not responsible for any of the content linked or referred to from it's pages. All youtube/dailymotion users signed a contract with the sites when they set up their accounts which forces them not to upload illegal content.

Web sites similar to alluc.org are quickly gaining momentum, all the while dodging legal flagging thanks to the number of changing hyperlinks.

Alluc.org’s biggest threat are companies including the Motion Picture Association of America, which has already won anti-piracy lawsuits against users on similar sites. Prosecution can include incarceration up to five years and fines reaching $150,000 U.S. per work.

Since users are aware that they do not own the copyright to these works, the onus is on them to accept the consequences of possible jail time if caught.

I had no idea... I read an article in WSJ that didn't indicate the user was at risk of legal action. Crazy stuff.

If they are going to prosecute someone, It would most likely be at a university, or some other concentrated group of people so the lawsuit would help directly affect piracy.

These movie companies don't want to spend money to prosecute some "joe shmoe" that no-one will here about. They want to go to major university where the word will get out, and they'll be able to recover the consumers that were lost by piracy. People who used to go to alluc.org will here about the lawsuit, freak out, and buy "the office" instead of streaming it.

The music industry has been doing a similar assault.

In Sweden, there is literally different parties that represent pro-piracy and anti-piracy laws. You probably would correctly assume that the major movie companies are heavily pouring in resources for the piracy laws to take effect, saying as how Sweden hosts probably upwards of 75% of these files.

Actually the legality of all of this stuff is a huge question. We need to start making some decisions as a society about how to handle the digital copyrights issues. Unless we get a clear moral basis this debate will never end. I wish there were easy answers. There aren't any though.

Seriously, there will never be an end to content sharing. With the invention of the Internet, it just makes it that much harder to control. Frankly, there is little anybody can do to stop it. Has anyone here ever heard of BitTorrent?

But I still dont see how it is illegal. There is nothing being downloaded. It is all streaming from what is uploaded on that site. As long as you dont upload or download it doesnt matter.

Only thing the gov or the show producer could do is go to these hosting servers and make them delete it. But nothing happens to alluc. This site has been around for a longgg time.

I know some of you older folk are kinda shocked by this stuff, but on college campuses or just with younger kids, there is just a ton of downloading. There are many safer ways than others. Like dont use Megaupload, that site is being monitored by the govt. But there are forums, specifically for music, where people post links to hosting sites. There are no torrents involved. Those sites run, are legal.
