saden1 07-16-2007, 04:42 PM Injuries, injuries, injuries. I suppose I have more faith in the DL than scouts Inc. Griffin is a stud and if he stays health that line will be rock solid. I'd be disappointed if we aren't in the top 10 defense this upcoming season.

My problem is that I don't believe he or Springs are going to stay healthy for many games again this year. I have 0 faith in him now. Call it bad luck if you want, but he's been injury prone every year. He's got to be a difference maker if the D line is going to be any good this year.
GTripp0012 07-16-2007, 05:16 PM He bases his arguments of 2006 performances, when 75% of the line was injured or playing hurt. Seems to me that 2-3 years ago, we had a very promising D-Line (everyone was healthy). Not sure promising is the right word. I think they were very good, but only bound to be deteriorated by age.
The cap experts were right, but not for the reasons they thought they were. This team is old, and financially dependant on those old guys. Not capped out as everyone thought they would be (of course, next year, we'll be both).
Beemnseven 07-16-2007, 05:16 PM I have to laugh when people try to defend our defensive line by what they did 2-3 years ago.
I'm through bitching about it though. Hopefully I'm wrong and Griffin, Wynn, Daniels and Salave'a have stumbled upon the Fountain of Youth sometime during the offseason.
That's the only thing we can hope for at this point.
GTripp0012 07-16-2007, 05:19 PM This analysis is most likely correct, but very simplistic in its nature. I don't think I learned anything I didn't already know from reading this report.
wilsowilso 07-16-2007, 06:01 PM I think it's a good thing for the D line to get a dead last ranking because you know that they will hear about it and it's pretty embarassing to be called the worst so I figure they will be very well motivated to prove that this ranking is not at all justified. If they were ranked 30th it might be easier to brush off, but last is last and these guys could probably use some fire.
Skinner 07-16-2007, 09:14 PM Damn, he right.Daniels and Wynn are like 80, and suck (seriously why havent we cut them now?) Griffin is always injured. Golston and Carter are the only promising players on tha d line.
Oakland Red 07-16-2007, 09:51 PM The secondary situation has greatly improved as has our linebacking, and that will reverberate in terms of what the defensive line will be able to do.
In passing situations, we have Marcus Washington (proven pass rusher) and Andre Carter (came on strong last year after switching from linebacker).
At tackle, Griffin has been excellent when healthy. He's healthy.
Anthony Montgomery has great talent and ability. Last year he was a rookie and it was a learning experience. I think he will show something big this year.
Kedric Golston has a lot of energy and ability and he is coming off a rookie season where he moved into a starting role. He will only be better this year.
Philip Daniels is healthy again and will only have to play in running situations.
Renaldo Wynn has always been a very competent and solid player, and is a good veteran to have as a backup in my view.
Joe Salavea has been hurt; we'll see how he does in a backup role now that he's healthy.
I have been hoping to hear some good news about Justin Hickman from UCLA, who we signed as a free agent. He is promising at least for the future.
Pocket$ $traight 07-16-2007, 11:21 PM Someone write that synopsis on some toilet paper so I can wipe my ass with it.
djnemo65 07-16-2007, 11:29 PM Well, I don't think the author gives a fair evaluation of Griffin, who while underachieving for a stretch with the Giants, has been pretty dominant with us when healthy. Second, I don't get the feeling he has really studied or understands the potential of Golston and Montgomery, who I think both have a chance to play solidly this season. We lack depth and we won't be dominant, but I think that we have enough talent to be more than adequate.
One final point. In 2004 people looked at the Skins defense and saw the Dline as our weakness, predicting we would give up tons of yards on the ground. In fact, we were ranked as one of the top rush defenses all season, and finished ranked third overall in total defense. The point I am making is not that this is 2004, but that 2004 proves that when you have a defense clicking as a unit it can make up for a lot of things, including a lack of big time names up front.
