my old computer, the one I'm using now, is about to bite the dust. i have a brand new gateway sitting in front of me, still in the box. is there anything i need to know, or can i just shut the old one down, and power the new one up?

Yes, provided you plan on not having ANYTHING file-wise from your old machine. If you do, buy a 1GB flash drive and use that to transfer your stuff.

Might as well just buy a 60-80 GB external hard drive IMO. Very handy to keep your music, Redskins videos, pics, and whatever you might have that takes up more than a couple Gigs worth of space.

I agree if you want to drop the cash. You can get a 250GB Seagate for around $85-90 bucks. That makes it easy for the next time you get a PC.

sounds like pretty big files. emqiling them is going to prove difficult if not impossible.

Dmek, just because I'm from the same area, who's your ISP? Reason I ask is that if you are with Embarq they have free online data storage (100 gb) and you could do that if you don't want to buy any backup media. But like everyone else said, the best bet is the external. If you can wait a few days, hit up tiger direct or newegg for the best prices.

Do you have high speed? I've set up FTP in the past and you can transfer those files to my FTP and then redownload them later...

Cheap way: USB Flash Drive. 1, 2 4 GB capacity, depending on your need. Drop onto drive, and download to new PC. I've seen 2 GB drives for 20 bucks.
More expensive way: External HD. They've come down in price, and give you a ton of extra storage space.
Alternative to External HD: Getting an external enclosure and drop the old HD in and connect to new PC via USB. It's relatively easy to do, and still gives you another extra storage space solution. Advantage to this is the ability to swap more Internal HDs in and out.

I got a 4GB flash drive for $20 after rebate.
That's the easiest and best way to transfer files. You can also hook the two PCs up with a USB cable and do it that way.
