Are the redskins gearing up for 5 WR sets?

Thats insane....no chance at all.
What they should do is have a 2 back set with ARE, Moss and Cooley in all the time.

There are your 5 best ball handlers and it give you the option to run...

Thats an interesting thought. I think that would be a good formation for this team (Im assuming you are alluding to a wish-bone type of formation).

With Betts and Portis, and sometimes Sellers in there, they could do many versatile misdirection plays, which they seem to love (ie. the counter). And besides that, on passing plays it would be nice to have Betts in there for a check down route and portis in for blocking/play action. Also Portis, though his hands aren't as sure as Betts, is a threat for a first down on little screens and other short passes out of the backfield.

Do many NFL teams utilize this formation? If not how come? If so why don't the Redskins?

This why I think it makes sense to go with the spread offense.
1. split Cooley out to get sombody tall as a reciever (mismatched with a linebacker)
2.mismatches all day with cooley, moss,AR, BL, McCardell
3.portis banged up (now power running game)
4. Line Banged up (now power running game)
5. Betts is better in space (you can rotate him in and out)
6.prevent blitzes (if they blitz sombody will be open on a quick slant)
7.get the ball in the hands of the playmakers in space more often.

I agree with Matty, you can't put all of that pressure to read Blitzes out of a 5WR set on a young J. Campbell. He will make the wrong read from time to time and kill us. At the same time, our line is too banged up to play "Redskins Football" power running an all.... The Skins need to play to their strengths, which unfortunately right now seems to be low scoring games with few turnovers that keep the opposing team off the field. Running some with a shot deep from time to time.

I am scared this week that the Skins will not be able to keep up with the scoring that Detroit will throw at them. If the Skins don't score 30 points against the Lions, they will lose.

We will not win a superbowl until the palyers and quarterback can make the reads. So we might as well start implementing it now.

I can't believe we gave up a 2nd and 4rth rounder for that donkey...what a disgrace!!! It's aquisitions like lloyd and archuleta that shows how incompetent are front office can be. Yes, we have made good aquisitions as well (Fletcher, Washington, Are), but we still are searching for answers at the wideout position and will continue to....Lloyd might as well pack up and get the hell out of town. . . . Campbell has shown no problem beating the blitz so far. He's actually gotten outstanding protection since he became the QB, and his decision making is generally outstanding for his age and experience.

He's just got to complete more passes, stop forcing the ball into bad matchups, and do the above especially well on third down.

All that said, Yoder should play on nearly every passing down to help in protection and be a safety valve. Cooley needs to be out in the pattern, and 5 guys running routes with only 5 guys blocking is usually a recipe for disaster. 4 guys in the pattern with 6 guys blocking tends to yield more success.

Gibbs would never do it. He's too worried about pass protection. Al S. would do it casue that's what he likes to do.

I would at least like to see more 4 wr sets and try running some out of these formations. That would help CP get in space a bit.

If you have five guys in the pass pattern , you cannot pick up the blitz , your qb gets beaten to death . You also lose time of pos. , tire your defence . JC has only 10 starts , he would get killed if we went to the spread ,,, anyone remember Detroit and Atlanta playing us in the 91 playoffs ? As great as W. Moon / J. Kelly were , they always struggled to score pts and sustain drives against the better defences . I know pts can be scored with the spread offence , but I boubt Moss / R El would hold up to the hits that they would take game after game .
