djnemo65 11-01-2007, 09:59 AM I definitely agree with regard to Gardner. But, I definitely do not agree with respect to Coles. I have every game the Redskins played during the Spurrier years on tape (prior to getting my DVD recorder) and when I watch old tapes of Coles I am always impressed. The only time Coles would drop one was when we was getting blown up and even then he would usually hand onto the ball. Does anyone remember when Coles got absolutely demolished going over the middle for a pass from Ramsey and fomer-Eagles safety Michael Lewis just trucked him? Coles caught the ball, got up, and did his signature 1st down pose.
My favorite Coles moment was when he ran down that interception in that Seattle game in 2003. It was 14-3 and that score would have put the game out of reach. Coles forced the fumble and I think we ended up scoring a TD on that drive. Wilbon wrote a column that week praising Coles as the best player on the team.
I also recall Coles getting rocked by Ray Lewis, I don't think he bounced right back up after that one but I do remember that he held on to the ball.

He bounced back up when Michael Lewis rocked him on Sunday night football but the Ray Lewis hit was nasty he had to get stiches.
Southpaw 11-01-2007, 10:22 AM That's not saying much.
Moss is our best since Monk/Clark/Sanders, but our WRs have been incredibly weak for a decade, including Coles.
That's just flat out incorrect. In his two years in Washington, Coles had 90 catches and 82 catches, and that was with below average play from the quarterback position. He was a good receiver while he was here and he was tough as nails.
Don't pay so much attention to the Dan Snyder media machine, that tries to diminish the accomplishments of every decent player that wants out of Washington.

7 TDs in 2 years is not that great. He had a lot of key drops too. Not as many as Gardner, but too many.
I admit, he WAS a tough guy, but that doesn't always get the job done.
Memories: :D

Sheriff Gonna Getcha 11-01-2007, 12:14 PM Buster,
You don't think he's still a tough guy. In my opinion, Coles is the toughest WR in the league.
sandtrapjack 11-01-2007, 12:21 PM Yes all that being considered about Coles and his mental and physical toughness.
That not withstanding, but are there not NEW league rules with regard to concussions? I thought I heard something about it during the off season from the owners meetings.
They voted on concussions and that once a player is diagnosed with a concussion, depending on the severity, it is mandatory that they sit out a pre-determined number of games.
I may be incorrect, but concussions in the league have become a very hot topic from the league standpoint.
Coles may not have a choice about playing or not, there may be a league rule that forbids it. Anyone else have anything more, or heard this as well?

I'm not sure he's the absolute toughest, but he's up there.
There are some other tough WRs I'd put up there with him, Boldin, Ward, and Steve Smith come to mind.

He had over 1200 yards in his first season in Washington. Only one other receiver(Henry Ellard) did that between 1991 and 2003, so to claim that he was a poor receiver is ridiculous. He didn't have a ton of touchdowns in his second season, but neither did anyone else on that offense.
