memphisskin 12-03-2007, 02:34 PM I just dont know how an organization that has so much money tied up in one position would be justified in using high draft picks, and then throw another 10-20 million at an unproven player. Moss if healthy can play a #1. He has shown the last few weeks he can get open, I think he is limited by the coaching staff in some degree. Now, I do agree we would benefit from a true #2 guy. also, who is to say another year in Als offense these guys wouldn't flourish (randel el, caldwell, trash ect)
We all have an opinion, I guess we'll find out in April. I dont see how any pick would be wrong since we really haven't done crap with the current roster. Only thing that we should NOT draft is a QB. so, if they go WR.. so be it. He better be a complete stud.
I would normally agree with you, but then I looked at Moss' stats. Outside of the Pro Bowl year in '05 there's nothing there that speaks to his ability to be a #1. Last year I thought it was because of Brunell's lack of arm, but then what's the excuse this year? And it can't be because of safeties playing over the top, because all year I've seen us line up in a Cover 2 shell and consistently give up big plays, well aside from when we had Meast patrolling back there.
I don't think another year in the offense has anything to do with it, because Lloyd was here for two years and he actually regressed. And supposedly this offense is pretty simple, it has to be if Caldwell and McCardell can come in mid-season and contribute right away. So we have money tied up in the position, but we're not getting our money's worth, how do we fix that one?
TheMalcolmConnection 12-03-2007, 02:47 PM I think Crabtree from Texas Tech will be the surprise of the draft. I think he could be had in the late first and lower second rounds and will be a huge success.
Cowell 12-03-2007, 04:12 PM It's hard to say whether I am pleased with our receivers. Sometimes they play great sometimes you have to wonder. I really think that Reche Caldwell and Keenan McCardell were great pickups. If McCardell wants I think he has another 1-2 years left in the tank. As for Reche, when he is thrown to he catches it, which is what we need here obviously. He probably won't ask for a big contract so I would try to lock him up for another couple years. I also believe that that Mix kid could be a factor. He is just too big not to be.

I agree that Crabtree will be a beast. But he's only a freshman (which makes his #'s even more unbelievable). Unfortunately he has to play 2 more years before he's eligible for the NFL Draft....
onlydarksets 12-03-2007, 04:49 PM How about some consistent playcalling and a decent gameplan first? With a healthy O-line, I think our offensive weapons are fine. We need depth at O-line, and you can never have too much help on the defensive side of the ball (especially at safety :( ). Let's try that before proclaiming a WR as a cureall.
BringBackJoeT 12-03-2007, 06:27 PM Well, if we're ultimately evaluating where we need to improve, what's the thinking of the potential of our young D-guys? Between Montgomery, Blades, Rocky Mac, Golston and Wilson, does anyone think--or read about any so-called experts that think--one of these guys could be a stud? Montgomery is of course seeing more action, and RM has been a starter all year, but what's the long-term potential of all of these guys?
memphisskin 12-03-2007, 06:49 PM I hope that we can find the answer either through the draft or on our own team, because year after year we look for the answer in free agency and our hit/miss ratio has to be 1:4 at best. So the chances of us actually identifying and landing that free agent are slim at best, probably because we hold things like "character" above "talent." Because while we were trying to move up to get Calvin Johnson there was no thought about us going to get Randy Moss.
I'm not saying character shouldn't play a role, but if the Sean Taylor media coverage proves anything its that we don't really know these guys as well as we may think.

I didn't know that until I looked him up yesterday and I was like DAMN. He's going to be the next can't miss WR prospect.

I was thinking about Randy Moss too, and I'll bet there are lots of teams wondering why they didn't pursue him. Problem is, he came to the Pats for way less because he wants a ring. He wouldn't have gone anywhere else unless the offer was out of this world.
Not only that, knowing our season, he probably would have gotten injured.
That Guy 12-05-2007, 03:51 AM According to a lot of the draft sites, we could get the best OG available in the middle to late second round.
thats true a lot of years, and i'm always up for taking an OL guy in the 2nd or 3rd every year forever. It's just a good idea cause of the value (high chance of being a good starter, low pay, low risk).
as for WRs, I do like DJ Hall. I have a huge Alabama fan as a friend, so i've seen him a bit.
i REALLY like slaton and mcfadden, but those guys would be a waste for us right now :/.
as for mccardell and caldwell... as long as those guys are our #3/#4/#5, they're good depth and worth keeping as long as they're cheap.
