As far as I'm concerned, you throw previous records out the window. If you haven't noticed, there are Joe Gibbs and Wade Phillips all over in the NFL. Just because someone doesn't succeed as a head coach, doesn't mean they won't be a good one.

Basically, I'd just like to see Gregg get the job, Saunders to call the plays and Blache to be defensive coordinator. Aside from the intangibles that Gibbs had, this would be about the same team as last year and at least keep team morale high and rebuilding low.

It's not likely, but anyone considering that the possibility that maybe Williams doesn't want it? That he's seen life as a head coach and would rather be the 2nd in command? That he's turned down interviews in the past not so much because he wanted to stay a Redskin, but because he prefers the relative nuts and bolts of being the COO of one unit, rather than the CEO of many.

Look, I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it if he wants it. All I'm saying is maybe he's not as interested in it as we all would like to believe.

Just saying, some people are better suited to be Scottie Pippen than Michael Jordan.

That's fine with me, I just want him to address that to the players.

I'm VERY concerned with team morale if we don't give Williams a fair shake in this process.

Well, I want to keep it internal too, for consistancy, but we are all assuming that Gregg can turn us into a super bowl bound team, and that's far from a fact. So far, GW has shown us he is a good DC only, not a good head coach. You can throw out the numbers if you want, but he was not successful as a HC. The comparison of Phillips and GW is not a good one cause Phillips was actually successful in his previous tenures. Including going 29-19 with those same Bills in 3 seasons (98-00). He also had a winning record with the Broncos back in 93, and in 5 full seasons (not including this year), he had only 1 sub .500 season (7-9 in 94). Phillips proved himself to be a success as a HC at the NFL level.

You also have to look at the personnel surrounding each coach. We have a good team in place and as far as I'm concerned, let Williams be the figure-head (much like it seems Phillips is in Dallas) and let Saunders do his thing and Williams and Blache do their thing on defense.

There's no harm in giving Gregg Williams a one year free trial. It really would be a free trial because if his team performs unsatisfactorily, you could cut ties with him and his staff after one season, and end up right back where we are right now. No big continuity issues necessary.

If however, they go out of house to hire, they better as hell hit on it, as there's no looking back after that.

Great post. No harm no foul.

From a strategic X's and O's point of view, there is really no better candidate out there than Williams. Problem is that X's and O's are such a miniscule fraction of wins and losses that you almost have to choose your coach entirely on more humanly factors.

The single most important quality for a head coach is that the players respect him and enjoy playing for him. All records aside, if your players like you, you have a good chance of achieving coaching success.

Can we compile of list of the "other" votes? :)

Who's on it, Cam Cameron? Tom Cruise? Lavar Arrington? Patrick "Starfish" Ramsey?

I wondered this exact same thing! He has always seemed to shy away from the media since he's been here...but I'm sure if it was offered to him, he'd take take it, seeing the relationships he's built with these players here. What matters most though is how he and Dan get along...and I haven't heard too many heart-felt stories there.
