Rooney Rule Prospectshooskins 01-11-2008, 12:04 AM Not Cuban My bad dude, just drawing blanks right now. BrudLee 01-11-2008, 07:46 AM I'm a minority but I dunno. I didn't think of it as minorities. Like I said in the Tiger Woods thread, I have a hard time thinking of things in terms of race. To me they're just prospects under the Rooney Rule, not, "Black dudes, getting interviewed". :silly: I hear you. I really don't see colors. The only reason I know I'm white is that the country club I belong to wouldn't have let me in otherwise. Clearly, this is a joke. Let's see who's panties get twisted. Rajmahal33 01-11-2008, 09:42 AM As a minority, I have to say the rooney rule is a joke. I dont think race has anything to do with uneven footing for interviewing for a HC position. Especially not so in a league where minorities are the majority in terms of players. Owners already know who they are going to pick regardless of who they are required to interview and often times only pay lip service to the rooney rule anyway. If an owner realizes that a black man can motivate his players (the majority of whom are black) he will try to find a qualified black candidate. He doesn't need an artificial formula (of how many minority candidates to interview) dictating how he conducts his search. Now that Dungy has won the superbowl and other black coaches have had success/shown their abilities as HC's, the football community will naturally look to them when there are coaching vacancies. It should be whoever is best for the job PERIOD b/c everyone has an equal opportunity for success (at least when it comes to football). saden1 01-11-2008, 10:13 AM Rooney Rule doesn't force you to hire a minority but it does plugs holes in the system where if you were a minority you were a career assistant and you were lucky to make coordinator. In any case, evaluating all options is a good thing so interview away...just don't let GW get away if you really want him. MTK 01-11-2008, 10:26 AM Chances are Tomlin wouldn't have been even interviewed by the Steelers if it weren't for this rule. Just saying. As Matty said... the Rooney's actually benefited from this rule (Tomlin). At least it gets the names out there... while some of the interviews are jokes, it is a start. saden1 01-11-2008, 12:01 PM Why are they a joke? Every interview is meaningful because that's when you actually learn something about somebody. Player's are mostly evaluated based on potential and so should coaches. When Gibbs was hired in 80, he was a nobody as far as everyone was concerned. Anywho, I hate it when people don't really know you yet have a negative perception of you. SmootSmack 01-11-2008, 12:09 PM Well I don't think Joe Gibbs was a nobody. Maybe more of a nobody to the average fan, because back then the average fan didn't have the same access to the league that he/she does today. I do agree that they are not a joke though. Apart from from the interviewer learning something from the interviewee, it also allows the interviewee to sharpen his interview skills. Sheriff Gonna Getcha 01-11-2008, 12:49 PM I personally don't think the Rooney Rule is a joke or that it is a bad idea. In fact, I think it is a good idea. There is an undeniable disparity between the "color composition" of coaching staffs and the players (no I don't think there is some grand conspiracy to keep minorities "down"). To the extent that the Rooney Rule affords minorities an opportunity to be heard, I have no problem with it. 70Chip 01-11-2008, 01:00 PM Everytime I hear the phrase "Rooney Rule" , I immediately think of this dude: http://re3.mm-a8.yimg.com/image/4008258215 (http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images/view?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fs earch%2Fimages%3Fp%3Dferris%2Bbueller%2Bed%2Broone y%26y%3DSearch%26ei%3DUTF-8%26fr%3Dvz-portal%26x%3Dwrt%26js%3D1%26ni%3D20&w=100&h=100&imgurl=www.slightly-bonkers.net%2Fdayoff%2Fbios%2Fedrooney.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.slightly-bonkers.net%2Fdayoff%2Fcharast_c.php&size=4kB&name=edrooney.jpg&p=ferris+bueller+ed+rooney&type=jpeg&no=8&tt=18&oid=3c82e04eb878efe8&ei=UTF-8) |
