Low cost? Do they usually charge for these events?
Yes some place charge...it depends. You can find some down in Maryland for $35 for two folks. That 'aint bad.
There's a spot here in D.C. that holds free wine tastings -more like sippings actually - free of charge during certain hours.
Wine's alright. I like pinot grigio. But in the end, I always come back to beer.
I try to enjoy a cocktail or some wine every now and then, but I almost always take a sip and then wish I ordered a beer. It's just what I like, I guess.
Yeah me too. Like I said we keep trying to get into wine, but to me you just can't beat a quality beer. We love to try microbrews and we love hitting up a good brew pub. Maybe we should just stick with what we know and like.

Wine tasting is a good way to find out about wines in general, and to try a wide variety of what the vineyard, store, restaurant has. Not sure how many vineyards are up in that part of NY, but they are generally the best places for wine tasting. See if any restaurants in your area has reduced price wine nights. There is one place here that has 1/2 price bottles on Tuesdays, which is great to try something you wouldn't normally try because of expense. There is also a liquor store here that has 10-15% off wines on certain nights as well.
Wine is definitely a personal preference type thing. I generally prefer the drier reds, while my wife has always likes whites but is slowly starting to like more reds. The whites tend to be sweeter while the reds are drier. If you are beginning, I'd recommend something along the lines of a chardonnay or pinot grigio and go from there.
The Australians are making some decent quality, low cost wines. Yellow Tail, Little Penguin, Lindemans are good Aussies and for the most part are less than $15 a bottle. But other than that, stick with the more known types of wine like merlot, the pinots (Grigio and Noir), the cabernets, shiraz, riesling, etc. and you'll be fine.
My wife and I had an awesome wine the other night. Mapreco Vinho Verde 2006. Very light, slightly sweet white wine that a very light carbonation to it. Very good when paired with food.

I've definitely become more of a wine fan over the past couple of years, Connecticut has a couple of wine trails with several vinyards that my fiancee and I like to go to. And I actually took a wine tasting class down in Baltimore a few months back. It was pretty good, except I have a horrible sense of smell so I was kinda like the dumb kid in class. Still, it's on my resume now :)
Guertzaminer is a pretty good white wine. And I love capping off the night with a nice port.
(goodness I really am nothin' but niles)

Cool. I was asking because my landlord owns a restaurant, The Wine Market, where they have that sort of thing every once in awhile.

From a servers perspective, I usually try to sell people "La Crema" pinot noir... most people seem to love it.
Personally, I'm a cabernet fan. One of my favorite things to do is eat cheese and grapes with some cabernet... but I always end up feeling like a huge douche when I do it.
