Day 1 Draft Grade

I did that for six hours last night. Actually, that may be why I am grumpy.

I would be so happy if we had taken Campbell or Groves instead of the TE, and an offensive lineman with the third pick in the second round.

SO HAPPY!

Instead, I'm totally baffled by this draft.

Every year we go out and do something ridiculous to bring in wide receivers when we should be building up our lines. EVERY YEAR!

I think Dan Snyder is gay for wide receivers.

I really wanted Campbell too...the Davis pick had me scratching my head. But let's face it, we have a very good Oline...yes they are aging, but look at the 91 skins, they were old too and still did one hell of a job. I still want a DE and I am hoping that we are targeting one with either the june 1st cuts, or via a trade.
I'm one of the few here that think we have nothing at WR. I like Moss, but he can't do it himself. ARE is useless to me, so we really need these WR's.
We have a fairly good Dline, but we lack depth and a solid DE opposite Carter...again, nothing the june 1st cuts can't fix, or a trade for someone like Taylor (we will need him to restructure though).
All in all, I like the draft.

2. Decide Coles isn't right and trade him for Moss
3. Go get Brandon Lloyd for a 3rd and 4th
4. Sign Randle El
5. Cut Lloyd
6. Decide Randle El and Moss aren't right and get two receivers with our 2nd rounders

Campbell maybe. Groves? We basically have him in Wilson (and now Jackson) at a much cheaper price. Groves is a tweener probably best suited for a 3-4.

We got great value with Chad Rinehart. Alexander and Heyer were nice free agent finds last year for the O-line. And we still have one of the game's best in Chris Samuels.

Then on defense, Andre Carter emerged as a premiere pass rusher. Chris Wilson showed plenty of promise. And we did draft a couple of DTs a couple of years ago.

So we really haven't been neglecting the trenches. Could we have done better? Sure. But really when you look at how many linemen the Giants, for example, have drafted the past few years it's not like they're blowing us out the water.

Plus, Moss and ARE aren't getting any younger (or taller and bigger). Further Blache has said that secondary play is key to his defense so building up depth at that position was important. Moreover, a defense's best friend is field position so getting the top rated punter in the country in the 6th round (while not my first choice) doesn't merit an F.

All in all, we made some very smart moves. As this "worst mnagement in the NFL" has done with its limited amount of draft choices in the past.

I'll give it a B. Really, to give it anything less than a C (C+ actually) is complaining just to complain.

What is the fundamental flaw with the FO, that we needed to upgrade our WR corps? That the WCO works well with two TE/FB types to create mismatches?

The vision is being dicatated by Cerrato & Zorn. Cerrato has an NCAA championship and a SB under his belt. Zorn was a starting NFL QB for several years....no experience.

We beat the Giants once last year and should've beat them twice.

Most of the analysts graded the Skins well on this draft.....I guess that indicates we have the "worst mgmt in the NFL" :frusty:

I would've liked to see the DL addressed earlier, but there's no argument we got value with all our early picks and they all fill needs. Blache was a DL coach for years, if he wasn't screaming for a DL then he must be comfortable at least for 2008. I believe the Guard we drafted in the 3rd can also play Tackle and our immediate need was at LG. Buges is a great line coach, we survived last year's injuries, we'll survive in 2008. With JC developing and big targets to hit we'll be fine and address the OL/DE age issue with June 1 cuts or in next year's draft.

Coles was a good player for us...he had a little attitude and large salary which ultimately led to us getting Moss.

2. Decide Coles isn't right and trade him for Moss

See above, we lost nothing but a contract...that was a WISE move, not a poor one like you suggest.

3. Go get Brandon Lloyd for a 3rd and 4th

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought it was only a 4th pick?
Yes, that was not a good move in hindsight, you can't always make the correct choice. This kid had talent and we didn't even try to throw him the ball.

4. Sign Randle El

Dumb move signing him for as much as we did, but overall, not a bad pickup. We needed stability as the PR position, and we wanted someone to create trick plays. Randle El was that guy. (still is)

5. Cut Lloyd

Needed to do that. Cut ties with what turned out to be a poor decision. FYI, there were SEVERAL teams that looked at Lloyd, not just us.

You're assuming!
Clearly there is no doubt that both those guys are not #1's...we just drafted two possible condidates.
