Soup's Uncle 09-03-2008, 09:41 AM I really want to think we'll do well.... but at this point I'm just praying we don't get roasted...
Same. It would be really bad if we just go out and get frickin killed.
Schneed10 09-03-2008, 09:59 AM This just in... The Giants will forfeit Thursday night’s game against Washington due to the inability to field a competitive defense, news at 11.
Osi (Injured)
Strahan (Retired)
Wilson (Lost to FA)
Kiwanuka (moved back to DE and the OLB's were suspect to begin with)
Who are their corners again? Oh, how could I forget a name like Sam Madison?
It looks like we would have been playing against Antonio Pierce and no-one else.
Hopefully we can field a competitive offense, or it will be a wash.
I'd be more scared of Justin Tuck than Pierce, personally. And Aaron Ross is no slouch. Given the safety help he's sure to get, I think he'll keep Moss under wraps pretty well.

Who is playing over Samuels, Justin Tuck or Mathias? I am not worried about whoever Samuels has. Aaron Ross is a decent DB and he will have help no doubt, but the WCO does not rely on the deep threat like our prior offense did. I think that we can hit some quick routes against them and move the chains consistently if we develop a rythm early. Thus it will limit the effectivness of there pass rush. If they keep 2 on Moss still then it is going to open up some other things. If they don't double him then we can take a shot downfield provided the protection is there.
Running the ball off tackle is going to be achievable in this game as long as we can get AP covererd up quickly because of their weakness at OLB. As long as we mix it up and don't get into 3rd and long situations we should be well off against this Defense.

A quick hitting passing attack assumes the QB has mastered the playbook. I'm not confident Campbell has.
But if not, hopefully we can just lean on Portis and try to grind this thing out.

I Concur with these statements, we shall see what happens.

Tuck is taking over for Strahan at LDE so Mathias should be over Samuels more often. Not sure how religious they are about keeping their DE's in one spot so we'll have to see how it plays out. I'm not overly optimistic about the game on Thursday, but I'm not going to throw myself off a bridge if they lose in New York either. Apart from that Sunday night win last year, the Skins have struggled mightly at the Meadowlands. With Landry seeing his first game action since the Seattle game and Taylor being limited even if he plays, you probably won't see the defense at top form regardless. Unfortunately the schedule makers didn't do the Skins any favors and the next four games are all going to be tough as well. Two good to very good offenses (and what should be improved defenses) in New Orleans and Arizona, then two division road games at Dallas and Philadelphia. Might have a suicide watch going on the Warpath by October. Luckily the Skins on paper should be better against the pass than the run so that should help with NO and AZ. If they can figure out a way to win against New York then maybe you can imagine a 3-0 start. I think it will be very difficult to win on Thursday though.
As usual, Portis is will prime the pump for anything that might work on offense and hopefully Cooley stays on the field almost the whole time. My wife was going crazy when he kept coming off the field in the 3 and 4 WR sets during the preseason. I told her that it was an attempt to get Devin Thomas more experience in game situations and that during the season Cooley wouldn't come off the field much. Hopefully that is correct.
Head over Heart Prediction: Giants 24, Redskins 17
BDBohnzie 09-03-2008, 11:13 AM National audience for a division game in the Meadowlands against the Super Bowl Champions. That's a doozy of a game for anyone, much less a team with a new head coach and a new offense.
Over the last 10 years (throwing out the 2005 Mara game), the Skins are 4-5 at the Meadowlands. 5 of the 6 losses were early weeks of the season (Weeks 1-5).
Over the last 10 years, the defending SB Champs have won Week 1 nine times ('99 Broncos lost 38-21 at home vs. 'Phins and went on to be 6-10; only away game was the '03 Bucs, who beat the Eagles in Philly 17-0).
What do those numbers mean? Nothing...well, in a sense, they are 2 strikes against the Redskins in terms of history. But history does not dictate the game, the players on the field do.
While the Redskins "struggled" the last 2 preseason games, I honestly do not think you can use those games as a barometer of how well they will do tomorrow night. They are a solid team built to weather the toughness of the NFC East. The Giants might be defending champs, but all that indicates is a bullseye on their backs, and with the injuries and key personnel losses, they're definitely going to need to be on all cylinders.
Nonetheless, taking everything I've seen and read and researched into consideration...
Giants 17, Redskins 13
Skins pressure Eli early and often, but the Giants RB Committee find holes and score twice. Portis finds pay dirt, and Cooley leads all receivers with 5 catches.
