You want to see CP of old? How about supplying him with Alex Gibbs and the Oline he had while in Denver? It's amazing how much easier it is for a back to find space when every defensive lineman is watching out for their knees... Don't misunderstand me, I would NEVER want alex gibbs to coach anyone on this team, the dude CREATES cheap shot artists.

If we can throw the ball consistently, you will.

CP would have had 100+ easy against the Giants if we had any sort of a passing game to extend drives and take pressure off him.
CP is the least of my concerns right now.
He may have had 100 yards but his average would not have been all that impressive...I think that is the direction that this thread was suppose to be going in..."The Clinton Portis Of Old" meaning the home-run hitter from Denver w/ damn near a 6 yard average. He's put up 100 yarder ever since he's been hear while at the same time he's leading the league in carries which means his average will be lower

Call me crazy but I think the best shot CP has early in the season to break longer runs is w/ misdirection starting in the backfield, which starts w/ Betts and CP in the game together and Zorn actually giving the ball to Betts a handful of times. Our air attack is not going to scare anyone for a while and Betts is a legitimate threat out of the backfield both as a runner and a receiver, so defenses cannot key in on CP alone which is exactly what we saw against NY. Some of those plays were even ridiculous - 8 or 9 defenders all keying on Portis before the snap even.

His big 24 yarder came on a counter.

Drastic? How many times did we hear Gibbs say he'd like to get them on the field at the same time? I've even heard Zorn mention it a time or two.
I guess the point I'm making is that CP alone in the backfield means the defense, literally the whole f'n defense, is keying on him. Of course this is because the pass does not look like a serious threat at this point. So... put another legit threat in the backfield. Mix it up even. Swap Betts and Sellers part of the time. But the important thing is to give some reps to the other guy. If we just use Betts/Sellers as a decoy for CP (as it seemed Gibbs did a time or two) then the double threat is lost. CP as a decoy for the other will open some lanes initially and start to give the defense different looks.
Personally, I like CP on a dive and Sellers on a sweep - nobody would expect it and I want to see Mike hurdle again:)

They were on the field at the same time a few plays on Thursday.
All I's sayin' is that we don't need to elaborately use up plays by sending Betts on a misdirection with one fewer blocker just to set up a long Portis run when we could just run misdirection with Portis. I would like to see more of Betts + Portis, but mostly with Betts as a slot receiver. Gibbs was creative enough to put Betts in the slot, Saunders was not, and that minimized his playing time.

2002 & 2003 Denver 5.5 yards per carry
2004 to date Was No higher than 4.3 (2005)
I will admit he can block very well (Just ask Mathias " I am going to accuse Samuels for a dirty play because I got jacked up by Portis" Kiwanuka) and is an outstanding ball carrier top 6-8 in the league.... but I think he should be right at 4.5. A blind man with half a right foot can crank out 5.5+ in Denver.

If we could have an entire team made up of CP's we'd win every game. The dude's got a heart like Rudy.
Good video of Portis, for all you haters:
