Comcast: Redskins contact DeAngelo Hall, may have deal within 24 hoursmredskins 11-07-2008, 09:44 AM Other then this thread I don't see any other web site talking about us signing him. SC Skins Fan 11-07-2008, 09:46 AM I didn't consider the very short term view (next game), but you're right - we don't match up well with the Dallas passing game if Romo is healthy, and he has Williams, T.O., Crayton, and Witten on the field together. If we can sign Hall through next season on the cheap, he would be on his best behavior to score a big contract in 2010. Even if Hall signed today I think the only way he would contribute against Dallas is by returning punts. Which would be a significant contribution. He's an improvement over Torrance and Tryon with more upside. His play, though, suggests he is not much more than a nickel corner. If the expectations (and money) are for a 3rd (or 4th in the short term) corner and punt returner than that is fine. If we think we would be getting a long term replacement for Springs I think we are probably fooling ourselves. While I will admit that the Falcons and Raiders were disfunctional organizations, Nnamdi Asomugha hasn't had much trouble being the best corner in football on that same horrible Oakland team. Hall was more than just a little bit bad for them this year, he has given up more catches or yards than anyone else in the league. Still, if it meant Torrance was relegated to special teams that would be fine by me. Leigh has to be a bigger liability in coverage than Hall would be. If he's a backup for depth or starter while Springs is out, I'm fine with it I guess. Hope he doesn't act up. Hold on...have to change the radio station, Cowturd is coming on. :D Monkeydad 11-07-2008, 10:05 AM Even if Hall signed today I think the only way he would contribute against Dallas is by returning punts. Which would be a significant contribution. :D You must be thinking of DANTE Hall. Hog1 11-07-2008, 10:06 AM You should check out the Vinnie show as he will no doubt discuss it ESPN 980 - Home of the Redskins (http://www.espn980.com/) GTripp0012 11-07-2008, 10:17 AM The number one mistake that bad organizations make is that they bring in poor coverage CBs because they have starting experience, and then in critical moments they decide to trust said CB because they have been there before. The end result is predictable. DeAngelo Hall's career best YPA, which he's done twice (2005 and 2007), is 7.4. But his career average YPA through the last 3.5 years (I don't have his rookie numbers) is 8.0. As a passer, Tom Brady's career YPA is 7.2. On the Redskins this year, Hall's career average of 8.0 yards per attempt puts him behind Fred Smoot and Leigh Torrence in terms of production. Now, he's 24, and figures to at some point in his career, get a lot better. And ultimately, there is a right price for everyone. I'm just not sure that "Nickel back when Shawn Springs is hurt" is something that's worth signing a head case for, especially when you can already get the same production out of the guys on your team. Now, if we're talking about signing this guy to be our future post-Springs No. 2 CB at a cheap price while the value is low, I think this is a completely different argument. But based on how similar our coverage schemes are to Oakland's, I think Hall makes us a significantly worse pass defense in the short-term. He's also afraid of contact, which is Smoot one big redeeming quality is that he'll throw his nose in there and hit someone. Hog1 11-07-2008, 10:18 AM Vinnie was just asked the Question. Both he and Larry sort of glossed over it and did not answer. It did not seem like they were in favor of that possibility of Hall joining the team BDBohnzie 11-07-2008, 10:19 AM The catch-22 to this whole thing is if Springs was healthy, there would be no talk of bringing Hall in at all. One the one side, Hall has talent to be a good corner and a good returner. On the other side, he got a TO sized ego, and has been suffering in Oakland. The Skins have the veteran leadership (Fletcher, Springs, Taylor) to guide Hall to make better decisions on the field. If we're talking small change, contract worded as such that he can be rewarded for good behavior, I see this as a small risk for a great reward. Worst comes to worst, Tryon is cut or Kelly is IR'd and we cut Hall in 2-3 weeks. Not saying I would like the signing, but I can understand it... |
