SFREDSKIN 01-19-2009, 10:57 AM He also put together a damn good 91 SB winning team w/ guys like Jumpy Geathers, Tim Johnson, Fred Stokes, Earnest Byner, Ricky Ervins, Jim Lachey, Wilbur Marshall ... I can keep going. Yes he made some bad moves when free agency first started. But I'd take Charley back over Vinny any day. You can just listen to the two men talk and tell who is more knowledgeable.
We finally agree on something :). Drafting Mario Williams over Reggie Bush was a good decision in his part despite people all over criticizing this move (including me). I'd take Casserly over Cerrato any day.
On this board,....I actually could see some people blaming Cerrato for the Texans futility. :) I probaby had forgotten some of the decisions Casserly made in the past. Absense makes the heart grow fonder you know.
lol hell why not? Let's just pin blame on him for everything that is wrong with the NFL?!
hail_2_da_skins 01-19-2009, 11:05 AM Casserly's commentary is very insightful. He gives a perspective that you don't hear about often in the media. He did a segment where he discussed the decision to draft Mario Williams and bypass Reggie Bush. It was very sound reasoning and a well though out decision. He got blasted for it at the time but it has turned out to be a very good move.
redsk1 01-19-2009, 11:56 AM God, this turned into a VC bashing thread. Well, I want in. How could anyone in their right mind rather have AA as opposed to Ryan Clark? Wow. Ugghhh. AA=40mill vs Ryan Clark=a lot less and a better player. Whoever made that decision should have been immediately fired....VC....JG....DS (could have fired himself from ever making a personel decision for the rest of his life). That's Raideresk right there.
skinsfan69 01-19-2009, 12:10 PM I don't know about anyone else but NFL pre-game shows are virtually unwatchable for me. You get the usual stories, TO, McNabb crying, PacMan. You get some players like Emmitt Smith couldn't break down a game if his life depended on it.
Then there's Charley Casserly. He's smart, clear, and offers up things you might not know. He's a no frills guy who knows the NFL. I've got to say, that's about the only pre game segment that i enjoy anymore. Anyone else enjoy Casserly's segment?
Love listening to Casserly. Dude knows his stuff.
SKINSFAN63 01-19-2009, 02:21 PM We truly need to cut ties with Cerrato and bring back Casserly or hire the Eagles old gm
SmootSmack 01-19-2009, 02:33 PM He also put together a damn good 91 SB winning team w/ guys like Jumpy Geathers, Tim Johnson, Fred Stokes, Earnest Byner, Ricky Ervins, Jim Lachey, Wilbur Marshall ... I don't think he was the GM when Lachey and Marshall were brought in. Ervins was ok for a third round pick, but given the same opportunities 7th rounder Rock Cartwright would probably be nearly as effective. Byner for Oliphant was a steal. We could use another Sotkes or Johnson. When we acquired Geathers, he was older than Andre Carter when we got him and Carter has given us nearly twice as many sacks.
A10sROCK 01-19-2009, 04:38 PM I'm not going to really blame Cerrato entirely for the Texans' futility. They were an expansion team, it's hard to expect instant success.
But anyway, it's amazing how many people seem to forget the 1990s and some of our stellar moves then (that had nothing to do with Cerrato), Harper, Wilkinson, Stubblefield, Noga, Banks. Or how about these awesome 1st round picks-Tom Carter, Andre Johnson.
Casserly's a decent executive, but let's not make him out to be some sort of God that was flawless while he was here
I'm not blaming Casserly for the Texans or the Redskins problems while he was GM. However, neither team did well or even average under his reign.
So I'm also not going to get all mushy about him because most have forgotten how bad these teams were back then . Nor does naming a couple good players when his team's records and most of his overall picks were sub par. If he was so good he'd be a GM or Team President like the Tuna.
BL - He was better than Norv and Vinny but there are better choices out there.

Agreed. However the Gibbs '91 team fell apart quickly. Free Agency was a much tougher gig. We've not done well since then. I'm simply saying you also have to look at the rest of Casserly's GM years under Norv and the Texans for a true picture.
I think Casserly has good football knowledge and is a good commentator. He is definitely better than Vinny, but then that's not saying much.
Vinny's 2008 draft picks and FA selection was poor. Zorn and thee team will suffer if that doesn't improve.
Ruhskins 01-19-2009, 08:39 PM If Casserly is so great, how come he hasn't been employed by a team. Is it his choice or is it that no one has hired him?
