GMScud 01-26-2009, 03:54 PM I have always wondered why the Skins were the football team in a lot of southern areas? Either way I am proud of the fact that some out of state people are fans of our beloved franchise. Sadly the way the team keeps losing that could easily change. How many in house folks have jumped ship to the Ravens?
I have also heard Japan is a major Skins area. The reason being they put on a good show in the first NFL game played in the country and now a lot of Japanese folks are fans of the team now.
For a long time, there were no teams south of DC along the eastern states. Actually, if you look at a map, there was a huge chunk of the country with no pro football for quite some time. The Jaguars and Panthers weren't around until '95, the Buccaneers didn't come around until '76, and prior to that, it was the Falcons and Dolphins in '66. So for quite a while it was just the Redskins south of the Mason-Dixon line.

My buddy hates the Panther's because of this. He lives in NC and would get all the Skins games then the panther's came along and he now gets all of their games. He broke down last year and purchased the NFL ticket.

Interesting side note, the original lyrics to "Hail to the Redskins" included the line "Fight for Old Dixie" instead of "Fight for Old D.C." (along with some other ... um ... variations). Maybe others remember that, though it was before my time.
hooskins 01-27-2009, 03:14 PM Skin em? Crazy how times have changed, only for the better of course.

I grew up in the DC area but came South for college. I still live in NC so I guess I am a displaced fan. The amazing thing to me is the apathy towards NFL in general in the area. ACC and NASCAR dominate and the Panthers only garner attention (outside of Charlotte) when they are winning. I tried to get behind the local team (as a second favorite only, of course) but I actually hate them more than any other team because of the horrendous "fans". Every Skins game here is 50% Skins fans. This year I hope we can make it 90% Skins fans.
portisrunshard 01-28-2009, 01:08 AM Ive been in the DC area for such a long time but just recently becamse a Redskins fan and stumbled upon this blog. I really like portis a lot. I just wish he wasnt partying a lot downtown in DC. I see him like every week out.

This is interesting. Did this happen a lot during the season? And where did you see him?
djnemo65 01-28-2009, 01:31 AM Since the beginning of time the world has been divided between patriots and traitors, statesmen and pirates, nobles and villains. For those of us native to the DC region who chose to follow our fathers into Redskins fandom, we are the good, decent people. For those bamas who, never having spent a day of their pathetic lives in Dallas, nevertheless chose to adopt the star as their mantle, well, I wish pestilence upon their blighted souls.
I’ve met a lot of DC area Cowboys fans in my day and, to a person, they are just kind of shady people. They like the Cowboys partly to spite their dads, perhaps, but mostly for the same reason they like the Yankees, Bulls, and Bluedevils – they are frontrunners who put winning before loyalty, and the Cowboys happened to be winning around the time they were choosing their favorite teams (in contrast, I was born into all of my teams).
I don’t care for them.

Bravo djnemo! Spoken with honor and dignity, like a true Redskin fan! Damn the gutless bastards! I would want them by my side neither in battle nor peacetime as they CANNOT be trusted. HAIL REDSKINS!!!

Onward Christian Soldiers was proposed as the original fight song for the Skins. Luckily that didnt happen.
