I'll see your broadcast trio and raise you Sugar Ray Leonard at halftime, doing a Dr. Lou type set piece. Talk about unintelligible...

Hell let's just toss in some wack packers from Howard Stern. I can see a studio show with Beetlejuice (http://haveadayeveryday.files.wordpress.com/2008/02/beetlejuice_closeup.jpg), Big Foot (http://howardstern.com/dtcms/tsimg/05_75259.jpg), and Elephant Boy (http://www.sternrate.com/files/ElephantBoy.jpg).

I haven't watched ESPN for nearly three years except for tuning in now and then for MNF (with sound muted of course). No offense to SmootSmack but ESPN is crap and has been for a while. Losing incompetent people is a step in the right direction though I am not sure if Emmitt should be atop the incompetent list.

That's ok, I feel the same way about Microsoft and some of your political views :)

In all seriousness though, ESPN of course isn't crap. Far from it. But Emmitt's departure was long overdue

You are definitely on to something there, my friend. None of them could be as aimlessly trivial as say, Lisa Guerrero or the aforementioned Eric D -- although they are ALL much harder on the eyes.

I like ESPN's coverage of baseball, basketball and college football (they don't really cover hockey, but then again who does anymore?). Their NFL coverage is so pro-Cowboy I can't watch it (plus I can't stand Chris Berman). With that, I've never subjected myself to Emmitt's commentary. I just watched a clip of him on Youtube that was hilarious. If it was any indication of his entire tenure then his release was justified.

How many former players have really made a smooth transition to being an announcer anyway? Troy is the only one I can think of that seems like he belongs in the booth.

HAIL!!

I do concur that Microsoft is crap. I don't work for them so I can keep it real homie. No one I know will miss Emmitt but further clean-up is necessary.

:silly:

Football players who made themselves into good announcers (play-by-play and/or color commentators) might include:

Al DeRogatis
Pat Summerall
Tom Brookshier
"Dandy" Don Meredith
Merlin Olsen
Dan Fouts
Dan Dierdorff (earlier in his career)
Troy Aikman
"Moose" Johnston
Cris Collinsworth
Ron Jaworski

It is perfectly possible for a player to be very good at play-by-play and/or color commentary.

Emmitt Smith had an "easier" job being a studio analyst (as opposed to doing live game coverage) where there was more time to prepare remarks for "set pieces". Emmitt Smith was a great player; I have no reason to doubt that he is a good person too; but he was just awful on the mic.

I do not revel in his firing; I am glad I will not have to listen to him anymore however...

I like the Kenny Albert/Moose Johnston team personally. Less annoying than the Joe Buck/Aikman team.
