Pocket$ $traight 03-11-2009, 04:50 PM I also agree that he is wasting a roster spot. He has no upside. Is having him on special teams really worth the roster spot? Nflnick11 03-11-2009, 04:53 PM I agree with pocket straight...dont feel sorry for just because be couldn't find another job, plus it's a bunch of BS that he had other teams offer him a contract like reported rypper11 03-11-2009, 11:48 PM I also agree that he is wasting a roster spot. He has no upside. Is having him on special teams really worth the roster spot? Yes. And so is Khary Campbell. Pocket$ $traight 03-11-2009, 11:58 PM Yes. And so is Khary Campbell. I think Campbell is better than Doughty. I don't remember Campbell proving that he can't be a starter. If they do a good job with their draft picks this year, don't be surprised if Doughty is cut. Lotus 03-12-2009, 12:08 AM I think Campbell is better than Doughty. I don't remember Campbell proving that he can't be a starter. If they do a good job with their draft picks this year, don't be surprised if Doughty is cut. I see Doughty as insurance at safety. Given depth needs, Doughty is a waste of roster space only if someone better emerges. I guess that the FO will bring in some other competition. If Doughty can hang, then he has improved (although you can't really improve speed like his). If he can't hang, then he's gone again. Dr Do Itch Big 03-12-2009, 09:32 AM We needed the depth, just in case. Monkeydad 03-12-2009, 09:43 AM Hope he gets #37 back and doesn't have to keep giving it away next year. :D BigHairedAristocrat 03-12-2009, 10:01 AM I don't mean to quible but, Doughty and Horton played both SS and FS during pre-season and Horton saw action last year during games at FS for a few plays when Landry was blitzing. So i don't think your statement is accurate. Doughty and Kareem Moore also saw action last year in the Cobra package as SS/LB/CB hybrids. Landry has always been a FS, he only played SS b/c Taylor (rip) was a Pro-Bowl FS. With Landry, Horton, Doughty and Moore i'm happy with the depth at Safety, my only concern is with Doughty's injury i wish they could have found a way to keep Springs b/c he was an insurance policy at S. :food-smil Quiblings alright with me, bro! We're all here to express our opinion and we dont always have to agree 100%. Like you, i wish we could have kept springs (to be our starting FS this year) but we couldnt keep him under his current contract. Neither Horton or Doughty can ever be counted on to play FS, though. Theyre both way too slow. Landry hasnt always been a FS - he's played both in his career. Hes very versatile. You forget that we drafted Landry specifically to play SS because we had Taylor and wanted him to play FS. that was our plan. The only reason Landry moved back to FS is because Taylor died and we had no other safety on our roster who could be a suitable FS. last offseason, it was our plan again to move Landry back to SS - thats why we picked up Stuart Schweigert, the starting FS from Oakland. The only problem was, he ended up being a bust... so we were forced to keep Landry as our starting FS and Doughty as our SS because they were the two best safeties on our roster. We drafted Kareem Moore (FS) and Chris Horton (SS) and when Doughty got hurt, Kareem Moore was hurt as well, so Chris Horton came in to play SS. If Moore had been healthy, its very possible, he would have come in and played FS and moved Landry to SS. Ever since we drafted Landry, we've been trying to get him to be our starting SS. However, due to death and injuries, he's never been able to spend significant time there. Horton had a great year last year, but i would be shocked if we dont try to move things around soon to put Landry back at SS where he can be more disruptive and make more plays and do all the things we envisioned him doing when we drafted him. Defensewins 03-12-2009, 10:23 AM I see Doughty as insurance at safety. Given depth needs, Doughty is a waste of roster space only if someone better emerges. No offense to Doughty, but he is not much insurance in case of injury. If he has to start, our secondary is noticeably worse off. Doughty like Smoot is a liability in coverage and gets picked on when they are on the field in the Defensive lineup. Doughty has to be protected in pass coverage by blitzing him or getting help in coverage. Basically he is a liability in coverage and he is not that great at supporting the run. The only thing he is half way decent at is blitzing. I think he had two sacks in one game two years ago and all of Doughty fans were ready to enshrine him. We can find another young safety that has upside. Doughty is - what you see is what you get. He is not going to get noticeably better. |
