Updated: June 16, 2009, 12:39 PM ET DA: Additional Leaf charges possible Comment Email Print Share ESPN.com news services Prosecutors in Texas have set a Thursday morning deadline for former San Diego Chargers quarterback Ryan Leaf to turn himself in on drug-related charges, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. "He can run, but he can't hide and we will find him," said James Farren, the district attorney for Randall County, Texas, according to the report. Farren is also considering additional charges against Leaf, who starred at Washington State and was taken second overall in the 1998 NFL draft, but struggled in a brief pro career. "There is sufficient information that I felt justified in asking the grand jury in keeping the investigation open," Farren said, according to the report. Leaf's attorney, Bill Kelly, said Leaf would turn himself at some point this week. "All this stuff about extradition is hype, neon-sign hype, as far as I'm concerned," Kelly said, according to the report. A warrant has been issued for Leaf's arrest in Randall County, where Leaf is charged with burglary to a habitation. Leaf also was indicted on seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and one count of delivery of a simulated controlled substance. The indictment alleged Leaf presented an incomplete medical history to several physicians between January 2008 and September 2008 to obtain or try to obtain the painkiller hydrocodone. He's also alleged to have broken into an apartment in Canyon on Oct. 30 and stealing hydrocodone, which had been prescribed to an injured football player. Leaf underwent drug treatment in British Columbia and is believed to be working there. Last week, Kelly told The Associated Press that Leaf is "not a fugitive from justice" and would return. Monday, Kelly said the delay in Leaf's return is owed to "paperwork issues that had to be completed as far as his work permit" in Canada, according to the Union-Tribune. But Farren has waited long enough, according to the report. "The fact that it's taking this long for him to make his appearance is creating some suspicion in my mind that he's stalling," Farren said, according to the newspaper. "If he doesn't show up by Thursday, we will be sending inquiries to every law enforcement agency that we can think of that might come into contact with him to make sure they're aware that there are warrants out for his arrest." sportscurmudgeon 06-17-2009, 11:31 AM djnemo65: You said: "...but it's sad to see someone who had appeared to have really stabilized his life veer so far of course. " If indeed he had stabilized his life, it might be sad to see something like this happen. However, I don't see a lot of evidence that Ryan Leaf's life was on some even keel and directed in some positive or noble direction. I feel sorry for Ryan Leaf. He clearly has psychological issues related to self-control (temper) and substance abuse. Having said that, many people find the strength to deal with those kinds of issues such that they can lead productive lives. Ryan Leaf is now 33 years old. He has had time as an adult to deal with these issues and the evidence suggests that he has been far less than successful at doing so. I hope he gets the help he needs and conquers these "demons". Until then, I don't have a lot of sympathy for him based on his actions. MTK 06-18-2009, 08:49 AM He clearly needs some help. Hopefully he gets it before something really tragic happens. firstdown 06-18-2009, 03:18 PM It's called bashing fatigue. He's been a joke for years. As for the addiction, I'm not one to bash, I never did back in the day when Dexter Manley fell victim, over and over again. Dexter was not a victim he willingly used drugs. 53Fan 06-18-2009, 03:57 PM Dexter was not a victim he willingly used drugs. To a point. Then they used him. firstdown 06-18-2009, 04:50 PM To a point. Then they used him. The word victim is thrown around to much these days. A victem is someone standing on a side walk who is hit by a drunk driver or shot in a random drive by. Not a guy who gets jacked up on coke but I do think he played better when he was using. John Denny 06-18-2009, 09:46 PM It's a shame. i thought he was doing well, coaching golf and football in Montana or Idaho. he seemed content. jgalecpa 06-21-2009, 09:40 PM Is Ryan Leaf the biggest mistake Dan Snyder DIDN'T make? J-Dawg sportscurmudgeon 06-22-2009, 12:11 PM jgalecpa: I don't think Danny Boy ever had a realistic chance to consider signing Ryan Leaf so that would not qualify here. The Skins never had a chance to draft Leaf - - and he came into the league before Danny Boy owned the team. He was injured when he went to Tampa and never made out of their exhibition season. When the Cowboys took him in 2001 and the Skins' coach at the time was Marty Schottenheimer who would rather have swallowed a jug of Drano than have a QB like Leaf. After Leaf played a bit for the Cowboys, he was through... |
