ok to spank your child?

Wow, I can't believe this is even news. Since when did it become wrong to spank your child on the butt when they are misbehaving? Obviously I don't condone beating your child, but the occassional spank on the butt? C'mon now.

I am almost, almost at the point for feeling sorry for the Gosselins thye really need to walk away form this show and go private for awhile.

On the spanking, sometimes it needs to be done. Espically for younger kids they can really get hurt if you don't give them a serious warning. My son is only 15 months so I have never spanked him but the day will come I am sure. If the difference is spanking your kid vs them getting seriously injured then yes I feel it is ok.

Yeah big announcement coming on Monday's episode. I can't imagine it being anything other than them confirming they are getting a divorce. I feel bad for the kids, but you could see this coming. Having 8 kids has gotta be mega stressful, and then you add a TV crew following you around and all the media attention that brings? Forget about it.

Back to the spanking, I can probably count on one hand the amount of times I was spanked as a child. But when I was I knew my parents meant business LOL.

There's nothing wrong with spanking as long as you're not scaring the kid into thinking they're in danger while it's happening. If you're coming at them looking like you're ready to kill them, they'll learn that it's OK to hit out of anger.

You gotta go at it with a cool head so they know you're in control, then they'll at some level recognize you're not reacting angrily, you're thinking clearly and dealing out a punishment with a well-thought-out purpose.

I like to use time outs first on my young'n. Then I go to the spank as a method of last resort.

I spanked my oldest daughter once and she saw how angery I was and I scared the crap out of her and I never had to do that again as she now knew when I meant business.

My daughter is 21 months old, and she's very responsive to timeouts, moreso than I thought she would be.

Exactly my recollection growing up, when i was spanked it meant something. Like anything, you have to start early and be consistent. It's the parents who change their raising habit a couple years in that suffer because the kids are confused. Spanking is love in my opinion.

my parents used to spank me and my bros atleast a few times a month. we were a pain in the rear to our parents so i guess it made sense they made us feel what a pain in the rear feels like.

side note: MD is a corporal (sp?) punishment state meaning you can spank you child as discipline, of course you go over the line or act unreasonably its child abuse.

I spank my kids as necessary, and I deem it necessary to spank my kids at least once a day. As soon as I get home or they get home from school I spank them on the bottom. I tell them that it's for all the things that they did wrong that I didn't catch them doing that day.

Not really, I do spank them but not that often. They usually know that I mean business. Sometimes they need a little reminder. For the most part I am calm about it and the older ones understand that it is punishment and not anger. I am not going to lie and say that I have never spanked my kids in anger, but even then, they were still only spankings.

It's funny and frustrating at the same time that whenever I go to spank one of my children and they know that it's coming, they try to shield their bottoms with their hands. Then you have to use the extra effort just to move their hands out of the way just to pop them. There is a form of comfort that I take away from them shielding their backsides though, it assures me that I am in fact spanking my kids and not beating them. If I was they beating them, they would be shielding more than their buttocks.
