Doesn't Van Pelt have his own show now? He's my favorite of the ESPN anchors, plus he's a local guy. Is he a Redskins fan? I think he went to Sherwood High School and I know he's a Terp.He did indeed.

DC just really has the Skins. Also keep in mind DC is probale the most transient city in the US. There are very few home grown locals in DC that pass down generation to generation a love of local DC sports. Also the amount of forgieners that live in DC that don't care about American Sports is pretty large. I bet if you polled all of DC the number one sport would be football and I am not talking about the kind football the Skins play. For the record DC United doesn't count these fans are cheering for their home country's teams. Probably best Sports Jock on ESPN radio is Erick Kueselias. the guy rocks and why they moved him to NASCAR is beyond me. Erik Kuselias - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erik_Kuselias) I would agree with that. He was filling in for Cowherd today so I stopped the dial on him for a while. I used to listen to him all the time back when he did the Sports Bash in the afternoons. mredskins 07-16-2009, 01:50 PM Sportsbash was good radio use to look forward to it on my afternoon commute when I had a commute. You know a guy is good when you sit in your car for an extra few minutes even though you are home from your commute to hear him wrap up his thoughts. SmootSmack 07-16-2009, 02:35 PM Sorry SS, but respectfully I'm not a fan of the big dogs on ESPN radio. I think Golic is funny, but Mike Greenberg's girly man schtick is SOOO tired. And I just can't stand his voice. Plus, commercials take up at least half of their show. It's amazing to me how many ads there are. And nothing is more annoying than radio ads IMO. I think Colin Cowherd is pompous as hell. He LOVES the sound of his own voice, and without anyone else on his show, it has a feel of him just forcfeeding his opinions. Plus he loves to bash the Skins. I've only heard Brian Kenny's show once, and it was pretty solid. Doesn't Van Pelt have his own show now? He's my favorite of the ESPN anchors, plus he's a local guy. Is he a Redskins fan? I think he went to Sherwood High School and I know he's a Terp. Seriously...I watch SBTB reruns in the mornings. My thoughts on Mike and Mike the show are that they can be good and their shows have good elements to them, but overall sometimes maybe they try too hard. My thoughts on Mike and Mike the people I'll save for another time. But honestly, I don't listen to them that often because in the morning, apart from checking this site, I tend to limit my sports exposure before I get to work because I know I'll be bombarded with it at work. I need balance in my life. Not as big a fan of Cowherd is of college football so I generally don't listen to his show but he's grown on me as a person SVP is a huge, huge, huge, Terps fan. It's kinda disturbing but good for him for being so passionate about his Terps. His radio show is pretty solid. He's got a face for radio :)...seriously though, his show is good. I like Doug Gottlieb's show. But truthfully, I don't listen to that much sports radio. And come football season, I generally will tune in online to 980 to get my Redskins fix SmootSmack 07-16-2009, 02:37 PM ESPNRadio.com is like radio on demand...and you can skip all the commercials (shameless plug) Skinny Tee 07-20-2009, 05:21 PM What is all the talk about the Mike Vick rumor about the Skins interest? Also, why do people think he can come in after two years away and resume his prior athletic dominance? Some people are lost in a pigskin fantasy to believe he'll be the same player he was when he comes back. SmootSmack 07-20-2009, 05:37 PM What does that have to do with 106.7 The Fan? Anyway, it's probably just people starting rumors...more likely Tavaris Jackson comes here (not saying that's likely) As for 106.7, they had Gibbs on today. DC Sports Bog has a recap: Gibbs on Skins: "Greatest Sports Franchise in the World" So hot on the heels of CBS Radio landing the Redskins cheerleaders at the 106.7 The Fan launch party last week and scoring the Westwood One NFL package, The Mike Wise Show debuted today with Joe Gibbs as its first guest. Another shot at the Snyder-owned rival sports talker, in preparation for a year of snarky sniping at the 500-pound dude dressed up in Native American garb? Well, maybe so, but when Gibbs uses the football questions to praise Daniel Snyder, Vinny Cerrato, Redskins fans, Burgundy wine and the gold standard, it doesn't really come across that way. Quite the reverse, actually. So for today, your options could be, Listen to Snyder employees on 980 bash the bloody heck out of the people who pay their bills, or listen to Gibbs on 106.7 talk about how "I think [the Redskins are] the greatest sports franchise in the world." This is all very confusing to me. I guess that's what happens when you have two sports talk stations in town. I'm preparing for a life of confusion, or at least six months or so, before one of them goes all-boy band. Here's most of the quote in question, concerning Gibbs's decision to come out of retirement, which started with him noting how the franchise had been in some disrepair for about a decade. "I kind of wanted to be a part of trying to redirect things and get the Redskins back to winning again," he said. "I think it's the greatest sports franchise in the world. It was a thrill for me to be a part of it....Do you take a chance when you do that? Absolutely, but then I would have missed all of those great things and those experiences over that four-year period with all the relationships that I developed with the players, the coaching staff, the front office, Dan and the fans. And I felt like it's something I wanted to do. "I wanted, too, for myself, to see could I be successful coaching in modern day football. I'd been away from it for 11 years. Certainly you never want to be afraid of taking a chance, and I felt like hey, that was something I wanted to do....The grandkids loved it. And Jackson got mad at me, our oldest grandkid, when I stepped down. 'What are you doing coach?' I said, 'Jackson, I want to come down and be with you and coach you on 8-man football,' and he said, 'We don't need you here, we need you up there.' " More Gibbs. On Vinny Cerrato: "He was a very, very valuable person in that organization, and he was for me. We worked together on acquiring talent, and I think Vinny had one of the best programs in place." On Jim Zorn: "People want immediate victories. They want to win right now, and sometimes that's not realistic, as we know. Coach Zorn won eight games the first year, that's what I did, and I think sometimes it takes a while to kind of build the right program that you want and get things going in the right direction. I think that's been a huge change in modern-day sports; everyone wants to win right now....I think he'll be so much more settled this year coming. I was." On being the biggest Redskin fan in the world: "I'm the biggest Redskin fan in the world." On Jason Campbell's offseason: "The quarterbacks that we've been fortunate enough to be with the years that I coached, they went through some tough times, believe me, all of them did....Theismann, at one point we benched Joe....Mark Rypien got benched mainly for turning the ball over....Doug Williams came in really as a backup, he'd been through a lot of things in Tampa, went to the USFL, got bounced around, got criticized for a lot of things.... "So my point with quarterbacks, and what I kind of tell them is this, I said, 'Look, if you can't handle pressure situations, if you can't handle all the attention you're gonna get...Particularly playing in Washington, D.C, it's a huge deal, you're gonna be put through a lot, and if you're the kind of guy that's got a temperament that those kind of things are gonna bother you, then chances are you're not the kind of quarterback that's gonna take a big-time NFL team down the field late in the game in a hailstorm to win.' It's just not gonna happen. "At times you're gonna get booed and kicked around, but if you have the right kind of temperament, at the end you're gonna win out as a quarterback, and if not, you probably weren't made to play quarterback in the NFL." On Michael Vick: "I think that's gonna be a tough one....He's gonna have to get in the right situation in the NFL. I think he deserves a chance to play again and I think somebody will take a run at him and I think he could be a great producer in the NFL. Obviously we've seen him do that before, but I think it's gonna take the right team right place, and I think he deserves another chance. I think that's part of life. I think he's paid a huge price for the mistakes he's made, and to me, I think he's gonna find the right place and the right team, but I think he's gonna need the right place and the right team and the right coach." Anyway, it's probably just people starting rumors...more likely Tavaris Jackson comes here (not saying that's likely) Couldn't see a Mike Vick thread so I put it in this one since they were talking about that on The Fan. I thought there was some intresting things discussed on there today. The big secret they waited to tell at the end of the show was the fact that Dan Snyder tried to but WJFK right before the start of their new Fan programming and the Lavar lineup...apparently he wanted control over the local redskins fan media...anyway, interesting stuff. BringBackJoeT 07-20-2009, 06:47 PM So should we expect a more positive view of the Redskins? Because either Snyder likes to hear bad things being said about his team, or the fact that he owns 980 doesn't matter b/c I keep hearing negative crap from the Sports Reporters. LOL. You know, during the last week of June, I was in the car listening to Kevin Sheehan ("The Locker Room"), and he was inviting callers/e-mailers to identify the worst move of the Snyder era. Some e-mailer made the mistake of trying to defend Snyder's firing of Marty (after someone had identified it as the worst), and Sheehan almost had a conniption. That was definitely not a filtered broadcast. skinsfan69 07-21-2009, 12:26 AM Couldn't see a Mike Vick thread so I put it in this one since they were talking about that on The Fan. I'm not sure why Snyder is so obsessed with buying up all the sports radio stations. They still poke fun at the front office on 980 ALL THE TIME. I don't think I can listen to Lavar and Dukes anymore. Lavar is still bitter about his ending here. STFU already and get over it. I had to turn it off when he started crying about how he gave back 2 million just to get outta here. |
