There was a discussion about the Cowboys today on our local sports talk show. Losing Terrell Owens and replacing him with Roy Williams was probably a boneheaded move by Jerry Jones. Williams may turn out to be a decent receiver, but nowhere near what Owens was able to produce. Then on top of that you give up two 1st round picks for him??? Yikes.

Williams would have to give you a couple of MVP seasons and a bust in Canton for that deal make any sense.

Witten is a great tight end, and you have a nice running game with Marion Barber. But take it from fans who know a thing or two about piss-poor offense: a great tight end and a good running game are not enough to get the job done offensively.

Where does everyone keep coming up with 2 first round picks traded for Roy Williams?

For the record

The Lions received the Cowboys' 2009 first-round pick, a third-round pick and sixth-round pick. The Cowboys get Detroit's 2009 seventh-round pick in the Williams trade.

So in essence, Dallas traded a first and a third for Williams.
And they traded thier 6th round pick in exchange for Detroits 7th round pick.

Only 2 draft picks were traded for Roy Williams.

I agree that they grossly overpaid for Roy Williams. That said, their running game has a chance to be not good, but great. Barber is a stud, Felix Jones looked amazing last year before getting injured, and Tashard Choice looked more than capable as a #2 when he went down. Now Jones is healthy. Their O-line isn't the caliber of the Giants, but they will have a very potent 3 headed attack out of the backfield.

They still suck.

Yes, they do have three talented backs. But neither Barber nor Jones have been true feature backs, either in the pros or in college. And Jones especially is injury prone. IMHO Choice is the only complete back on their roster. So they are a bit less than a true three-headed beast.

The folks up front for them, presumably opening the holes, are also aged and injury prone. We'll have to see but it is possible that none of those backs runs very far behind that line.

I can't think of any team off hand that has 3 backs of that caliber. Choice is an avg. nfl back, but he could be at least a #2 on many teams if not start for a few. Jones & Barber are both really good. I don't recall Jones being hurt much in college, just last year. He's a guy that has breakaway speed & ability, got to keep an eye on him at all times. He will be particularly dangerous in the flats on screens, drop offs.

Barber was their feature back last year. It wasn't his fault the team fell off. He had a good year & always plays hard, runs, blocks, recieves.

Their line has been really good the last couple years, but the only thing I agree w/you on is that this year they might see serious drop off. They're getting older & slower. Run blocking is their strong suit though, and if healthy they should be able to do that. I look for their pass pro to be an issue.

Probably thinking back to the stellar Joey Galloway trade a few years back.

Yeah, disgusting though it is, they looked pretty good. I agree that the health and age of the o-line is the key for them.

But the roids have started strong a bunch of times now, and fade either late or in the playoffs. Will the line and Romo still be a "well-oiled machine" then?

Titans looked like the miss big Al. All those "all-pros" on that D may have benefited a bit from the big man in the middle. For the record, I do think they're a good D--Fisher always puts a tough group out there. But they're going to have to adjust, no doubt.

I don't know how much it means, but they also have a different DC this year. Their tackling hasn't been the greatest in this game either.

Right--those things (new DC) do matter, but it's hard to tell yet. Agreed about the tackling.

They do look a lot better today than they did last week, but the penalty/undiscipline are still a major issue. There have been at least two blatant false starts not called on Flozell Adams, who usually leads the league every year. You don't think that he's aware that most pass rushers are a step faster than him?

Dallas' first team was not the issue, maybe Oakland's first defense is just good. I wouldn't read too much into their defensive dominance in this one: I think most teams are going to dominate the Tennessee offense this year. Kerry Collins has looked very bad.

We've seen the flashes from their running game here, and the biggest improvement from last week is in the timing of the passing game looks very sharp. But they don't looked like a team without flaws, and there's nothing that says we can't do just as well tomorrow.
