I wish we hired Gregg Williams as our coach.

Why is it that Williams, possessing such an allegedly gigantic ego and contentious personality, has been able to thrive under/alongside so many personalities and within several organizations in the league? I mean c'mon this idea that NFL coaches are nice guys who must find a way to cow-toe to their owner carries no water...

...the fact is it's lil Danny who has only been able to get along w/ two coaches his entire tenure as owner: Joe Gibbs (who gets along w/ everyone, period) and Zorn, one of the seemingly most mild-mannered, ho-hum types you can find on the sideline. Not sure how much longer Snyder and Zorn we'll be buds but that's another story. Bottom line is it's Snyder who has all the issues when it comes to people, Vinny doesn't help either as his lack of personality is becoming rather infamous.

Williams has a stronger track-record than anyone on our staff, period. Throw him under the bus for the one year stop in Jax if you like, ignoring that the defense wasn't entirely turned over to him and he didn't get to recruit talent. When given control as he basically had w/ the Skins and definitely has now w/ the Saints he works wonders w/ typically not elite talent. That said, and it's certainly obvious by now I'm a big fan and totally believed he deserved the HC job here, I'm very happy he landed where he did. I think he'll acquire a SB ring within a year or two and that wouldn't likely have happened coaching in D.C.

good post. I was also hoping he got the gig here. I know much has been made of his 'ego' but he learned from observing Gibbs & would've been able to grow as a head coach here if the Danny let him.

I don't think that one incident was as big a deal as it was made out to be. It's more that he just has a "rough around the edges" personality. There were some pretty ugly rumors about his time in Buffalo. Domestic stuff, but nothing ever verified so it probably was just ugly rumors

Even if true, that was in buffalo, and he is owed some leeway for his past. Like anyone, I would think he's learned & matured in the biz. What really did he too to alienate the skins mgmt.?

I'd say it's pretty telling that since 2004 when he became our DC he's never been considered a serious candidate for a head coaching position anywhere else. You don't have to be touchy-feely to be a head coach in the league but apparently being a complete prick isn't the way to get it done either.

The Jets vs Saints game was pleasure to watch. Both defenses are aggressive and play well. Unlike the bend but don't break/play not to lose/pussy style of defense we play. Williams had his CB's up tight on the WR and you could actually see the safety's. They we not playing 20 yards off the line scrimmage.

The Giants vs Saints game following the Saints bye week will be potential playoff preview. Should be a good game of two really good defenses.
Greg Williams is a respected coach in the NFL and is a better coach than Blache PERIOD.I agree. And he would be a good HC too. He's paid his dues.

After I believe the 05 season he had an excellent shot to get either the St. Louis, Houston, or Kansas City job, but ended up getting a comparable amount of money to stay on as DC with us. He was definitely considered seriously by those teams.

I totally agree with this post, the way he has been coaching lately is just remarkable. Makes me just wonder, what in the hell is blache doing? We have some of the best pass rushers in the league and we can barely get the blitz game going.

I don't have specific examples in front of me.

But in the case of management here, I should clarify that I'm really talking about Cerrato (not Snyder). And many would say this is another reason Cerrato has to go, because it was really Cerrato who showed Gregg Williams the door and kept Fassel away too. Two strong head coaching candidates. Particularly the latter, in my opinion. Still though, there's no reason to believe Williams will be a successful head coach given another opportunity. Just the hope.

Gregg Williams has New Orleans playing strong defense right now.

I kinda figured VC would've been the one that butted heads w/him. One thing GW has going for him on his resume is that his only job was in buffalo. That's been one tough place to win since the advent of unrestricted free agency. Since we beat them in the super bowl, both teams fell off & have been stuck in mediocrity.

Maybe Williams is just a good coordinator, that doesn't necessarily make him a good head coach. Maybe he'll have a good second stint as a head coach. But he could also falter again. He has alienated management in more than just Washington, and he seems to be best suited to focus singularly on one unit and have someone else oversee everything and be a buffer between him and management.

That's entirely possible. See Norv Turner.
