I doubt T.O. is going to have a coniption about his number. 81 was available as a number just being used by another player. Of course any player will try to pay for the jersey they want. Our is retired. Number 18 is actually a pretty good idea. He needs a change, and the reversal of the number is just a play on having a change.

He could counter that it's only "unofficially" retired and that a "great" WR like him should deserve to wear it.

Absolutely, he's getting #18 whether he likes it or not. Tell him to do a cartwheel if he wants to see his number in the mirror.
