Big C 12-19-2010, 11:05 PM And what if we go after Vincent Jackson, or Eddie Royal?
jackson would change things somewhat, but imo royal is not a number 1 receiver, and im a VT alum so im without bias here on royal. plus im not sure id want jackson with the contract crap he pulled with the chargers either way.
drew54 12-19-2010, 11:15 PM I would like to see us trade down(hopefully adding a 3rd rounder) to where ever Locker is slated and grab a few bull rushing DE/DT types in the 2nd/3rd rounds. Someone like Christian Ballard from Iowa(homer pick).

I would tend to agree re: Royal. I'd rather see what Austin and Banks can do, plus acquiring Royal would likely mean a trade of some sort since I don't believe he's a free agent.
Who knows if we will actually go after him. But the guy who told me Skins are strongly interested told me three things last winter, that the Skins would sign Torain and Grossman and trade for Jammal Brown. So I have to give him the benefit of the doubt. He's also told me Davin Joseph and a LB (I don't know if he knows who) are high on our radar as well.

Well I'll tale his word then lol Joseph would be a good pickup another former sooner? Mike did coach at OU a long time ago lol
Dirtbag59 12-20-2010, 12:11 AM i could counter and say who was the last 1st round qb that we drafted to make it? jason campbell? patrick ramsey? heath schuler? we havent done a good job at all at drafting qbs high the few times we have.
my basic point is that id rather draft a different position in the first round and get a guy to develop behind whoever our starter is, whether it be in the second round or later. im really not sold on anyone but luck as an elite qb this year, and hes only a redshirt sophomore this year.
And my counter point is to look at where the top QB's in the league were drafted. Phillip Rivers, Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, Peyton Manning , Jay Cutler, Aaron Rodgers, Ben Rothelisberger, Eli Manning, Josh Freeman, Mike Vick. Even our very own Donovan McNabb was a first rounder
You think the first round hit rate is bad yet you completely ignore what is virtually a 0% hit rate of second round QB's over the past decade. Kellen Clemons, Tarvaris Jackson, John Beck, Drew Stanton, Brian Brohm, Chad Henne, Kevin Kolb, Pat White, Jimmy Clausen, Quincy Carter, Marques Tuiasosopo.
Out of that group Kolb is the only one on track to have a productive career. Clausen might turn into something but chances are he won't. These are the type of guys you find in the second round. (As I pointed out before Brees was selected 32nd overall which today is a 1st round pick, which in turn is moot for anyone lobbying to draft a QB in the second round in 2011, and by the way Brees sucked until 2004 which ironically was the same year the Chargers said enough and drafted Phillip Rivers).
skinsfaninok 12-20-2010, 12:23 AM ^ good post DB, what's your take on a QB in the 1st? Honestly I'm not really convinced on this class of signal callers.. If newton is there do we take him? Or do we look at a QB in FA or trade? Alot of options right now

I have my doubts about Locker. However as Tripp pointed out to me earlier in the week Locker is very similar to Jay Cutler coming out of Vanderbilt. A physically talented signal caller with a terrible supporting cast, only real difference is that Locker has great straight line speed. Personally I think this is the guy they're targeting. Shanahan liked him a lot last year (almost as much as Bradford) and this was when Locker would have been all but guaranteed to be the top pick in the draft.
Mallet to me seems like a safer pick and reminds me a lot of Matt Schuab which given Kyle Shanahan's experience in Houston can only be a good thing. However that lack of mobility in an offense where bootlegs are a staple kind of worries me. My other concern is that with Luck all but certain to stay another year that he could get picked before we go on the clock. It's not that I'm dead set on having Mallet but I would like to have options. Either way I'm impressed. He did a good job of continuing his development as a passer
Newton is my least favorite as he comes from a spread option offense. I've personally described him as Tim Tebow with a smooth delivery. He also doesn't seem to have the best head on his shoulders. The guy was kicked out of Florida for steeling laptops and the only thing I know about his support structure is he has a father that put his sons eligibility and college education on the line by asking schools for money. I mean if thats the father then what does the rest of his support group look like? Basically he's the last person I want to give millions of dollars to.
On top of that he runs to much for my liking. His passing numbers are efficent but when you rely on your legs to the tune of a 1,000 yards rushing I'm inclined to doubt how well you can throw the ball at the next level.
My only real stake in Newton is having him as a buffer that helps insure the Skins get to pick between Mallet and Locker.
Luck is a pipe dream whenever he comes out. The best we can hope for as it relates to Luck is that he ends up in the AFC because come playoff time he's one of the last QB's I want to see.
mooby 12-20-2010, 06:01 AM I don't think Luck is going pro this season from his comments, it sounds like he wants to stay in school for one more season. I won't be disappointed if he doesn't, I don't think we would've had a shot at him anyways.
As for wideout, I don't think we're as bad off as people believe. AA has 40 catches for 772 yards this season, which is probably more production than we've had at the #2 wideout spot in a while. Those are CC type numbers, which makes the fact that Cooley is still putting up good numbers even better, because for a while Moss and Cooley have been our top two options in the offense. Going into next season, I think our focus needs to be on the offensive line, getting a qb in the draft, and the defense. I don't get what people want more from Moss. I know his drop at the end of the game yesterday probably cost us bigtime, but more often than not he makes those catches.
I like what Rex did yesterday but you can't discount the turnovers. I won't include the pick at the end of the game, but his first pick and his fumble directly lead to 14 Dallas points. I know Rex did great throwing 4 td passes but since two of his turnovers lead to 14 Dallas points 2 of those touchdown passes didn't mean anything. I loved the game he played today except for the sacks and turnovers, and he def. proved the coaches right in benching McNabb. Sucks for McNabb now too because now people aren't going to give him the benefit of the doubt, when this came out practically everybody was on his side.
Longtimefan 12-20-2010, 06:21 AM Saying this defense is an embarrassment is truly an understatement. Most of the talk following the game has been centered around the play of Rex Grossman, and based on his performance [minus the turnovers] was remarkable considering his limited playing time since 2008. Four TD passes, 322 yds.....numbers that should on most Sunday's produce a win, left the team just short once again.
This team needs more of a fix on defense than any other part. The offense demonstrated yesterday that it's major deficiency this season has been it's signal caller. Granted, Grossman's performance came against the 25th ranked defense in the league, there was still a fluidity to the offense not witnessed before.
Redskins vs. Cowboys: For amount of yards given up, team has no defense (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/19/AR2010121904266.html)
Beemnseven 12-20-2010, 07:03 AM I Say keep moss and AA, add royal and Kelly (if healthy) and give banks some more reps at WR. Although I really would like to see A BIG WR here next season
A BIG wide receiver? Haven't we tried that? Remember, we passed up on Desean Jackson because the thought was we just HAD to have a wideout over 6'2".
I'm sick of the tall wide receiver argument -- just get a guy who's fast, and who knows how to run routes correctly. If he's over six feet, great, but I don't think that matters much anymore.
