Tragic.

And I'm not saying that what I'm about to bring up is the same. But on this board, and on other similar sites a lot of people like to mock Tony Romo by calling him Tony Homo. For one thing because they think it's funny since Homo rhymes with Romo. But also, because it implies that he's an effeminate, homosexual who isn't "man enough" to play football. Yet I doubt any of who throw the phrase around consider that a) some of the NFL's best players (past and present) are gay or that b) when you slander his name like that you may not realize that a fellow Redskins fan is on this board reading that and feeling a bit hurt maybe because they are actually gay.

Anyhow, like I said it's not the same as what's happened in Buffalo. And I'm sure many of you who call Tony Romo Tony Homo don't think of it as a gay slur. But I thought I'd just put that out there.

Really who? I can't remember any NFL players coming out. Not that it matters.

This article says that none have come out.

There are several from the past that have come out (including former Skins great Jerry Smith). Just b/c they have not come out doesn't mean they aren't there:

It's just a matter of time before an active player comes out.

No active players have come out, but they exist. And there are former players who are as well, including a few who have come out. Among them former TE Jerry Smith a member of the "70 Greatest Redskins" team

I know and actually reall y don't care if they are or are not gay. I just could not remember any coming out while still playing football.

Esera Tuaolo, Former NFL Player, Comes Out as Gay (http://www.outsports.com/nfl/20021027eseramain.htm)

Esera Tuaolo is the only name I remember, even though he was before my time. I read an article about him coming out a couple years ago. But it'd be pretty naive to think gay people don't play sports. I'm sure they play in the league today. But I do feel bad for them, having to keep it under wraps for fear their career could be over.

Sadly its not just the players in the NFL that have to hide the fact they are gay for fear of reprisal, many coaches, owners and even cheerleaders may also be fearful to come out. Several years ago 2 female cheerleaders were caught having sex with each other and ended up getting fired for violating a “rule that bans conduct that's embarrassing to the team or organization”.
