As I said, I don't want to derail this thread into talk about an 18 game season. I mean WP was in the league when they expanded from 14 games to 16 games, but I don't think that caused his problems.
What I think I'll remember as much as anything is that he ended his career against the Redskins. I think it was a 4th down run and he didn't get the first and then next thing you know that's it. His career is done
So, I was close, it was 4th & 8 according to this article:
Sports of The Times; Walter Payton's Last Time - New York Times (http://www.nytimes.com/1988/01/11/sports/sports-of-the-times-walter-payton-s-last-time.html?pagewanted=all&src=pm)

If memory serves me correctly, it was the 87 playoff game v. the bears in soldier field, which we won on D. Green's 52 yrd. punt return. I remember that last play too, I think it was a pass to W. Payton on 4th down (4th & 7 maybe?), I can't remember if he caught it or not but I do remember him walking off the field.
Mike Golic talked about that feeling this morning, that's is so sudden but you realize it's all over.
Oh that's right it was a pass. People forget that was a 14-2 Bears team whose defense I believe gave up fewer points than their famed 85 team. That win is one of the more underappreciated of the Gibbs' 1.0 era
Yeah I remember that scene of him sitting on the bench after the game like he couldn't believe it was over.

Is that the game when Darrell Green cracked his rib leaping over a defender returning a punt?

You know what. I'm getting my years confused. That was the DG punt return game that was WP's last game. That was the 1987 season (88 playoffs) The year before is when Monk had two TD catches to lead us in a bit of an upset over the 14-2 Bears

I think so, though I'm not 100% sure. But I do remember we went into Solider's Field and knocked the snot of them and stopped WP. That return by DG was incredible.

See the link I posted earlier, it was definitely that game - unless you think the NY times is really incompetent! Great game, to me that DG punt return & C. Mann constantly in the backfield were the defining moments of that team's run, even more so than Williams to Sanders in the SB win.

When I saw the title I knew before clicking anything that there was a book coming out. People will do anything to make a buck.
