Patriots Waive Haynesworth

Putting the final snaps of Albert Haynesworth's career with the Patriots under the microscope after New England released the veteran defensive tackle Tuesday:

Believe it or not, Haynesworth's first three snaps of his final full drive (or one that didn't end with a one-play touchdown) with the Patriots were actually pretty solid. On the first play after the Giants took over early in the second quarter following a Tom Brady interception, Haynesworth jetted right past David Diehl and nearly blew up a running play at the handoff (see screenshot above). On second down, he got good push against guard Chris Snee and the Giants dropped a pass.

After an encroachment penalty gave the Giants a new set of downs, Haynesworth came about as close as he had to registering a sack, drawing a holding penalty (above) while still nearly getting to quarterback Eli Manning. If his day had ended there, Haynesworth would probably still be on the Patriots' roster.

But things went downhill. Quickly. And Haynesworth spent his final five snaps either being pushed around or on the ground.

On 1st and 20, the Giants tried to set up a little screen. Haynesworth attacked and got left eating a face full of turf when Snee released his block to get up field and block. The pass was incomplete, but Haynesworth was left flopping around on his back (above).

On 2nd and 20, the Giants ran a draw to D.J. Ware. Haynesworth's penetration should have helped blow the play up, especially when Ware got pinned behind Snee. Instead, Snee pancaked Haynesworth (above), allowing a 10-yard gain.

On 3rd and 10, the Giants again went to the air, but Haynesworth got swallowed up and stumbled to the ground at the line of scrimmage. At times, he simply looked unable to maintain his balance during the series.

Haynesworth appeared for just one more play later in the quarter, providing a solid third-down pass rush, even if he again lost his balance coming off the edge (in his defense, he was double-teamed on this particular play).

He was back on the field after another Brady interception gave the Giants a short field in the third quarter and it would be his already well-documented final snap in which Diehl pushed him around on Brandon Jacobs' 10-yard touchdown run.

A heated conversation reportedly followed with assistant coach Pepper Johnson after the play. And less than 48 hours later, the Haynesworth era was over in New England.

Looks like the original thread on Haynesworth where I was debating the sense in trading him got locked at some point. I tried to show up there to eat some crow, so I guess I'll do that here.

Kudos to Shanahan for getting rid of him, I questioned the logic of it but today more than ever it was obvious Shanahan was right. He's changing the culture and in the long run that's a positive. Too bad we're 3-5, while the Pats continue their culture of winning even with Haynesworth in tow. Guess it goes to show QBs like Tom Brady make more of a difference than any other single factor, culture included.

But kudos to those on this site who saw Haynesworth as the lost cause that he was. I figured that being a moneygrubbing whore, he'd be motivated to earn one more big contract. Many of you guys saw him as simply being a steaming pile. I'm stupid. You're smart. I was wrong. You were right. You're the best. I'm the worst. You're very good-looking. I'm not attractive.

I'm glad Shanahan made the move. Now lets go out and find a QB like Brady so we can keep winning no matter how many cowturds we have in our locker room.I echo Schneed's thoughts, then and now.

Well, unlike Shanahan, BB didn't wait to release him or try to "teach him a lesson." Granted that the Pats really invested close to zero on him (a 5th rounder for the Pats is nothing for a team that constantly has multiple picks in the first couple of rounds).

As I've said before, in the end this isn't much of a victory, since it clearly shows that this guy was an issue and the MS should've gotten rid of him as soon as he started here (and get that 3rd rounder that according to rumors got offered for AH).

I think this thread probably represents the Warpath's post-mortem discussion on the career of Albert Haynesworth. All questions about his character and career arc have been answered at this point. Once this thread runs its course, he'll be history around here.

Of course I thought that about Offiss and Patrick Ramsey, so who knows.

The Eagles are gonna look really bad picking him up. Beyond desperate. I dont see how they make the playoffs with or without this guy. If Reid picks him up, seriously start to wonder about the future of the Eagles without Reid.

People will continue to talk about this because they think it is some sort of victory for the Redskins, when it really isn't.

Sapp utterly destroys the guy...and a fascinating tidbit relayed to Fletch from Sapp.

But now he's the first $100 million man? I was dumbfounded by it. I'm like, who was he in his first five years in Tennessee.
