I hope Cofield isn't too upset.

I honestly don't remember how much of a sure thing Brees was thought off when he became a free agent. Of course we all know how things turned out, but still. I don't think Brees was a huge risk at all in FA. The only reason I didn't advocate signing him was because we had just drafted JC and we all thought of him as the qb of the future. If we hadn't drafted JC I'dve been all over Brees. And the huge risk thing is overrated. Yeah, he had hurt his shoulder. But it wasn't even being talked about as something that could end his career or keep him out long term. The injury was a short term concern. My point is that Brees wasn't a "sure thing" when he became a free agent; if he was, San Diego would not have gotten rid of him. SmootSmack 02-06-2012, 10:12 AM Did we forget about Phillip Rivers? mooby 02-06-2012, 10:13 AM So you are saying that San Diego got rid of him for no reason whatsoever? It was obvious Brees wasn't going to be there forever. They had a choice to make and they decided to go with the younger, cheaper, and more long term option. Brees made it a tough choice since he started playing decent ball in '04 and '05, but that combo of factors played the role. Yes the injury factored into that too but I don't think it was ever a question of would he return to the same performance level. The injury was just bad timing. Ruhskins 02-06-2012, 10:14 AM Did we forget about Phillip Rivers? Was River drafted while Brees was still the Chargers QB? I can't remember. SkinzWin 02-06-2012, 10:18 AM Was River drafted while Brees was still the Chargers QB? I can't remember. Correct. Rivers was drafted in '04. Brees's last year in San Diego was '05. SmootSmack 02-06-2012, 10:19 AM Was River drafted while Brees was still the Chargers QB? I can't remember. Yes. They drafted him when Brees was the starter, but he wasn't the Brees we know today. He was barely struggling to hold on to the starting job over Flutie. So in 2004 the Chargers drafted Rivers. But he held out for most of training camp so Brees was the starting QB going into the season and ended up having a monster year. Then he got franchised and had another huge year in 2005. Rivers wasn't cheaper, but he was younger. Once again, my point is that Brees wasn't a SURE thing like you said he was. His injury was a factor, otherwise Miami would have picked him up. Instead, they went with Culpepper. Bad choice of course, but Miami was concerned about the shoulder. I think at some point, this team is going to take a risk in terms of getting their QB. I guess you could make the argument that they did that with McNabb, but who knows maybe they do need to pay a bit of a ransom to get an RG3 or Luck. Still, there are very few sure things out there in terms of QBs. Let's just hope any risk we take works out for once. |
