I would say finding ways to win games on a consistent basis makes you "competitive".
Not losing close ones all the time.
Exactly; this is the NFL not NBA, MLB and/or NHL. A two win difference between teams is huge here.
If the Skins were 5-4 right now vs. 3-6; it be a lot sunnier around here. Two win difference any other league means jack.
I wonder if there is a metric that would compare how good the best NFL teams are compared how good NBA/MLB/NHL best teams are.
For example who is the worst team:
CLE Browns or the NO Hornets
Or the best team:
ATL Falcons or MIA Heat
I guess I am trying to say what is the dealt of quality between good teams in the NFL and poor teams versus other leagues.
I think without any research that the level of quality between NFL teams is higher then other leagues. Basically it takes more energy/talent for the Falcons to roll the Browns then the Heat to roll the Hornets.

There really is not a lot of blow outs in the NFL. Most games are relatively close.
This article does a good job explaining it. Basically good teams find a way to win in the NFL; it is not the margin of victory that determines they are good but the victory itself.

Thank you. All this stat illustrates is how competitive the NFL is -- where one of the lesser teams (us) manages to keep a lot of games interesting.

This means absolutely nothing, btw. Look at the teams at the top, the best in the league over that span, and look at the teams on the bottom, the worst. Its a damning figure, not one to take and try to squeeze optimism out of. Anytime you are compared with the Clevelands and Detroits of the NFL, thats usually not a good thing, no matter how the shanahan apologists (or anyone) want to spin it.
Couldn't agree more

Exactly. The league has done everything in it's power to create parity since the days of Rozelle. All GM's and HC's are not the same. Some know how to build and coach better than others. Some owners are better equipped and have the ego to turn things over to those who are more qualified to run a team. Consistently losing close games is not much of an endorsement for a franchise. Especially the longer it goes on. BTW.....Your sig may be my all time favorite.

This tells me that we are a great team that can't seem to finish games. We know how to be competitive, but we just don't have that extra push from either our players or our coaches or both.it tells me the opposite. Great teams finish games, great team don't lose close games they win by blowout.

Makes it sound like we're a lot better than our bad record indicates! :D
