If I have to do it for you, then I have to do it for everyone else here... so sorry!" That's about a polite a response to an autograph request I've heard from DG in the past 15 years. He's usually not so considerate. It's totally common for athletes to not to sign autographs. Some are total jerks about it, many however are very polite about it. SolidSnake84 07-08-2013, 06:21 PM I am truly sorry for anyone who truly has life-altering injuries after leaving the NFL, but sometimes, just sometimes, I scratch my head at some of these guys. It seems so many players come out of the woodwork now and claim all these brain injuries and concussion, etc... usually years after they retire and when probably all their money is gone and they have nothing left. Mark Rypien, one of my redskin faves, said a few years back how bad his day to day life is, how he can't drive anymore, forgets things / people, etc, due to concussions, but in the same breath promotes his celebrity golf tournament that he sponsors or what not... Even recently Clinton Portis came out and said that he had on record at least 10 concussions during his time as as a 'skin. I question that number strongly because he was only TRULY a starter for five seasons here, and usually each year he missed time due to injuries, etc.. to have "at least" 10 concussions that means he was suffering 2 concussions, possibly more each year in limited action. I don't really know what to think of that, because to me it comes off like Portis, now retired, is trying to keep his name out there and trying to give himself some "toughness" by saying he had all those concussions and still played. I think when the average person thinks of CP, they for sure think of the glory days, but right up there had to be his last couple of years of battling injuries, being out of shape, and low work ethic.... Remember, that tournament is in conjunction with the Redskins and benefits the Micky Steele foundation (or something close to that in name) along with The Rypien Foundation. The foundation helps kids with cancer. Remember Mark's son passed and he is just trying to help families in a rough time in their lives. The Rypien foundation actually has staff that handles the day to day operations. Guys get dinged all the time and don't let anyone know. It doesn't really take much force for your brain to get knocked around inside your skull. Where g-force and gray matter meet | endeavors (http://endeavors.unc.edu/spr2008/football_concussions.php) SolidSnake84 07-08-2013, 09:23 PM I agree with Matty, i was just kind of in disbelief at the number of concussions he said he had. I just felt that over the last couple of years the NFL has been much more serious concerning concussions...Portis was here for some of that but still hard to believe he was taking like 3 concussions a year and nobody knew. Consider that Troy Aikman retired after suffering 3 concussions in his last 4 seasons...makes me wonder how many he had over his whole career. 15, 20 concussions? could it have been more than that since so many players hid them from trainers, coaches, etc.... |
