skinsguy 03-25-2005, 11:19 AM So as you can see Daseal, Gibbs pretty much built his racing empire from the ground up. He wasn't just someone who sat in the pits or in the stands counting the money coming in. He has taking an active role in doing what needs to be done in order to be successful, not neccessarily by opening his wallet, but using his brain... and it paid off for him in Nascar - something he had little knowledge about in the beginning. There is no comparision of Joe Gibbs the owner of a Nasacar team and Daniel Snyder, the owner of the Washington Redskins.
firstdown 03-25-2005, 11:23 AM I heard he made coffee and bought the donuts
Matty are you talking about "Racing to Win"? I bought the book, but haven't had a chance to read it yet.........But I did read his book "Fourth and One".....
very insightful, and it talked about Gibbs having to file bankruptcy because he gave an investor full power of attorney because he was totally immersed in the Redskins, sleeping at Redskin Park etc, but this investor lost Gibb's money. It also talked about his wife having a stroke. Even with all his fame and fortune he did go through some rough times in his life.
I forgot he had two books. I'd like to read them both, in the one you read does he give much insight into coaching the Redskins?
Daseal 03-25-2005, 12:21 PM I don't know anything about Nascar, nor do I really care to learn. I feel it's a waste of time watching cars go around in circles and you can always see the crashes on the news. If any of you read Maddox, I agree with his views on Nascar for the most part.
He mixes two things I hate and makes fun of both at once (PS - if you're sensitive, don't read the quote. Don't want to hear your complaining): As for the "Vertigo" song itself, it's a mix of twangy guitars, unnecessary spanish, and Bono's stupid glasses. By the way, just because a singer wears stupid goggles doesn't mean that they're suddenly cool or hip. Oooh look! Bono the rock star is wearing redneck Nascar goggles, let's all fellate him for being so rebellious; take that Hollywood! They're still the same goggles that dumbass Nascar fans wear to every boring Nascar "event." Man I hate Nascar. And while I'm at it, here's a quick open letter to the NASCAR community: quit writing poems about Dale Earnhardt. Nobody cares. And no, it wasn't NASCAR's fault for not making the tracks wide enough. Nobody would watch NASCAR if it weren't for the wrecks because it's BORING. You love the wrecks because it gives you people something to talk about in your boring lives; don't get all teary eyed when one of your redneck heroes bites it, you hypocritical turds. The wall won, get over it.
Anyhow, maddox.xmission.com - some of them are funny, some are plain stupid. Maybe something to keep Malcolm busy between posts at work.
The point I was making is I'm not sure the role of most other owners so it's hard to compare. I certainly don't doubt one bit that Gibbs was a great leader, he always has been. He surrounds himself with great staff which is good too. Hopefully if he doesn't get it going this year he'll surround himself with an offensive coordinator.
TheMalcolmConnection 03-25-2005, 12:58 PM Daseal, you are speaking of my OTHER most frequented site! I can't believe you mentioned that... I have read every post from the beginning to end. LOL
Daseal 03-25-2005, 01:08 PM Me too! I love it!
TheMalcolmConnection 03-25-2005, 01:10 PM I REALLY REALLY want that sticker that says, "For every animal you don't eat, I'm going to eat 3."
Daseal 03-25-2005, 01:13 PM haha - screw that. Get the tshirt!
Just start aim at work, it's easier to chat that way!
Here's another Gibbs/Nascar article I came across:
http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/NFL/2005/03/25/972253-ap.html
KAPALUA, Hawaii (AP) - There's not a whole lot of difference between running an NFL team and a NASCAR operation.
At least that's how Joe Gibbs sees it after returning to pro football to coach the Washington Redskins a year ago. He spent the previous decade at Joe Gibbs Racing, overseeing two Winston Cup champions, Bobby Labonte and Tony Stewart.
"They're exactly the same, those two sports," Gibbs said during the NFL's annual meetings. "Anybody from here who goes over there, I tell them: 'You won't believe it.'
"You're asking a 25-year-old, no, begging him, 'Please, Tony, take $6 million.'
"You have a quarterback and a driver, crew chiefs and coaches. There are 13 people who travel with a race team and 13 who are on your coaching staff. There are roughly 320 people in both. The numbers are pretty much the same."
So was the success for Gibbs, who won three Super Bowls in his first stint coaching the Redskins, then started up his NASCAR operation and soon became a major player. He said many lessons he learned in football translated well to auto racing, and the same is true moving in the opposite direction.
"You have the car and the technology, and here you have the Xs and Os," Gibbs said. "You have the people and the egos and all the guys winning championships wanting to come in and say, 'Hey, it was me, it was me. I won the games; I won the races.'
"And you can have the miscommunications the same way. The first year I was there, we lost a race because of the noise. Just like when you call a play and you thought someone said 'two' and it was 'blue.' We had someone in the crew who thought it was two pounds when it was two rounds."
While Gibbs wasn't behind the wheel going 190 miles per hour at Daytona or Talladega or trading paint at Bristol, he often went to driving schools with sponsors. He got up to 150 m.p.h.
"It definitely gives you a deep appreciation for those drivers," he said.
BigSKINBauer 03-25-2005, 02:45 PM is gibbs a redneck?
