Where would people get the cartridges to put the ROMs on? That would be interesting to do! (Although I'm sure a bit "illegal"!)
I'm pretty sure you take existing cartridges and overwrite them. Here is an extensive tutorial (http://callanbrown.com/index.php/basic-nes-reproduction) on how to do it.
I loved Joe Montana football, I need to find that.

Hhhmmmm...I'll have to check that out. These game cartridges can get kind of pricey, so I'd hate to overwrite a game that might be worth a lot more in the long run.

My baseball choice when I was a kid was Earl Weaver Baseball ii.

It only came with "Classic" rosters, not current players but I loved how you could edit rosters. I fired up my Tandy Computer and with the help of one of those annual baseball guides, I created all 26 MLB teams with full rosters.
I added a ton of star players to Magic Johnson Basketball and did a lot of tweaks on the original Madden game too.
Even up to Madden 2005 for PC, I'd download current rosters up until about 2009 when the nerds lost interest and stopped making roster updates. I made college teams too (just uniforms/fields, no rosters).
That's the one thing that I really miss since EA stopped making PC versions of Madden, the ability to update rosters.
When we drafted RGIII, I actually fired up the Madden 2005 on my PC and made him and started a franchise mode with him as the QB. :D

Don't forget about NBA Jam!

um, madden 08 for pc is still updated with current rosters and draft classes:
Files - Football-Freaks Madden PC Wiki (http://ffmadden.wikia.com/wiki/Files)
they're just listed under mods instead of rosters now, since they update the portraits/uniforms/player splash pics etc.

Ah man! NBA JAMS! I LOOOOOVE that game! Brings back so many memories of my teens! Being out with my friends on a Friday night at the arcade in the mall! That and Mortal Kombat I & II, Street Fighter, and Tekken! Ahhhh....I'm feeling so old now, lol!

Thanks for the info. I had Madden 2005, which they lost interest in.
Might have to "upgrade" to Madden '08.
