Skinsfanforlife 04-29-2005, 01:55 PM I'm NOT anxious to see the cap hit we would take for it, in addition to the fact that it never hurts to have another great return man waiting in the wings.
He was a great returner for the Jets, he hasn't done anything here..........

Thats true he has not done much here, but he cant be the whole return team also, our special teams have far ben steller as a whole since he has ben here. It takes all 11 guys to get it done if one fails the whole squad(SP) fails...
Red Robert 04-29-2005, 02:08 PM The key word here is team. Morton is one guy of 11. If you do not have the guys who will finish blocks, bust wedges, and hustle in front of you you are doomed. I returned kicks in high school and a little in college and you are only as good as your teammates will allow you to be in the return game.
Yes Morton is a disapointment, but the entire team has been as well since Morton arrived.
Schneed10 04-29-2005, 02:25 PM Cutting Morton now would hurt our 2005 salary cap. He is currently on our 2005 salary cap for $1.04 Million. Cutting him now would make his cap hit $1.5 Million, taking away $0.46 Million of our precious cap room, of which we have about $2 million (and we still need to deal with Santana Moss, Rod Gardner, and sign our rookies). Not gonna happen.
Cutting Morton after June 1 would be pretty smart though. His current '05 cap figure would go from $1.04 million, to $0.5 million, giving us an extra $0.54 million in room to play with. That would come in handy for dealing with the issues that face us. If we did this, we'd carry $1.0 million in dead cap money in 2006. But that is less than his scheduled $2.3 million 2006 figure.
I'd say there's a good chance we'll axe him after June 1.

Why Rod Gardner? Isnt he in his last year of his contract?
offiss 04-29-2005, 02:41 PM I think Morton is finished with us, maybe we keep him around for specials if his cap # isn't that bad, but there's no comparison between him and Brown or Moss on kickoffs, I am very exited to see brown on kick's especially punt's, the few times we used him he was as explosive as I have seen, Daryl Green type of explosion, as Portis said "he's the fastest human he's ever seen" as for Moss he is recognized as an elite return man.
It's true you need blocking to get off a good return, but I believe in the return game the player carrying the ball is as equally important as his blockers, and Morton wasen't creating something out of nothing, both Brown and Moss have the ability to do that.
dirtbag2112 04-29-2005, 03:06 PM I would make a good special teams player...people tell me I'm special all the time.
TheMalcolmConnection 04-29-2005, 03:17 PM "Life Goes On" type special?

Yes he is. I just meant that they still have to decide what they're going to do with him. I think they were counting on trading him to get the $1.5 million in cap room it would save, but since they weren't able to, now they have only about $2 million to sign Moss and the rookies. I wouldn't rule out Gardner getting axed outright, because they might need the cap room that bad.
TheMalcolmConnection 04-29-2005, 03:31 PM Especially if there are some promising rookies that need to get signed.
