So me and the family are taking a little road trip and we have it narrowed down to either Asheville, NC (heard so many great things about this city), or Washington DC. DC is alot closer to home, and my wife wants my 8 year old to see all the monuments, etc. I figure I can pick up some Skins gear so Im fine with it.
My dilemma is that hotel rooms in the DC area run at outrageous rates. Can anybody recommend an area near by that we could drive to and fro the city. Preferably somewhere also cool and light on the traffic?

What dates are you looking at?
As long as you have Metro access you can do all the DC tourist stuff.

Punch, DC is great for kids, alot to do in a small area around the Mall. Its been over 10 years since I lived up there, but I think Alexandria is a cheaper place to stay and has some cool things to see as well, especially Old Town. The access to the DC is just across the river and I think it would be cheaper than Arlington area.
Asheville is great for the outdoorsy types, a completely different vacation. Its small mountain psydo-hippy village where everyone is on foot is unique. Really a good spot for beer drinkers, foodies and people who enjoy music. Nothing is flat around Asheville, you are always climbing up or down.
I would think Asheville would be cool for couples weekend, DC better for kids, education, history, etc.

Comfort Inn in Balston; not bad @ $140 a night you be right on the metro line. Plus stuff to do out there at night all up and down Wilson BLVD.

The dates you said are in the middle of the cherry blossom festival, which means there are definitely some cool things for you and the family to check out, but also hotel rooms might be a little pricier. But I think if you look around you can find some good rates.

no 1 thing - have the hotel as close to a metro stop as possible.
