That Guy

he's got a 3 year deal and they kind of wanted to keep him, but if you've got 2-3 guys that are pretty equal and someone makes an offer for one of them, option 2b + a 5th is better than 2a i guess. i'm just speculating - I don't know the 49ers TEs for ish.

Niners fans like him, don't like seeing him go, still young with good upside.

What on his resume justifies a 5th round pick ?
We're over a barrel. We paid a bit of a premium but that's what happens when you're only reliable TE is out for the year, your other usable TE is a china doll, and the rest are rookie camp fodder. We couldn't go into the season with JReed and a bunch of guys plus Tom "not actually a TE" Compton.

It's a conditional pick (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/08/21/report-49ers-trade-te-carrier-to-redskins/). And only in 2017 -- because the 49ers already had a bunch of picks next year. I'm okay with this.. He's young, relatively inexpensive and has potential. Could help w receiving and blocking, we'll see this weekend, could develop into a bigger Niles Paul.
And I think Carrier himself said he "picked up" a #41 jersey because it was available. But I'd bet he was trying to be politically correct.
