You ever try using the pen tool to cut them out and them changing the path to a selection? That'll give you a nice vector-based edge that's VERY clean.
It's an either/or situation. They taught us to use the eraser in school, but I found it quicker using the pen tool and then changing the path to a selection. If that seems quicker to you, you might want to give it a try.

I don't use either tool to cut people out. In the avatar case I designed the background first so they would all be the same then I layer the pic over it and use the eraser tool to cut them out. I like doing it that way because it gives a nice anti-aliasing edge that looks much cleaner.
