Kap also had the incident with his socks, basically a big F U to law enforcement. He has no one to blame but himself.

I think part of the explanation is most people's opinion of Pit Bulls, I think a lot of people wish the breed was exterminated, it wasn't like Vick was drowning Labrador puppies. Also whether the left agrees with it or not the United States flag is viewed as a sacred symbol by many.
