Outrageous HSBC Settlement Proves the Drug War is a Joke | | Rolling Stone

Quote:
If you've ever been arrested on a drug charge, if you've ever spent even a day in jail for having a stem of marijuana in your pocket or "drug paraphernalia" in your gym bag, Assistant Attorney General and longtime Bill Clinton pal Lanny Breuer has a message for you: Bite me.

Breuer this week signed off on a settlement deal with the British banking giant HSBC that is the ultimate insult to every ordinary person who's ever had his life altered by a narcotics charge. Despite the fact that HSBC admitted to laundering billions of dollars for Colombian and Mexican drug cartels (among others) and violating a host of important banking laws (from the Bank Secrecy Act to the Trading With the Enemy Act), Breuer and his Justice Department elected not to pursue criminal prosecutions of the bank, opting instead for a "record" financial settlement of $1.9 billion, which as one analyst noted is about five weeks of income for the bank.

The banks' laundering transactions were so brazen that the NSA probably could have spotted them from space. Breuer admitted that drug dealers would sometimes come to HSBC's Mexican branches and "deposit hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash, in a single day, into a single account, using boxes designed to fit the precise dimensions of the teller windows.

As I told you, the system is rigged.

Adrian Grenierrug war demonizes people - CNN.com

Documentary coming out, interesting fact:

"How to Make Money Selling Drugs" reveals that the real big bucks are made in the law enforcement, drug testing and prison industries. Each year, the U.S. spends more than $51 billion on the local, state and federal level to fund the drug war. This money would be well spent if it effectively protected public safety and health --- but instead it has dismantled families and communities, while reinforcing violence, overdose and illness.

Fortunately, the public is growing more aware. A majority of Americans believe the drug war has failed and support reforms such as decriminalization of marijuana, according to the Pew Research Center."

Thumbs up Re: War on Drugs Cant Be Won, According to Global Leaders

Why, it's almost as if we've allowed a drug class to be created to provide a revenue stream.

Cynical yet?

Too bad issues like this can't generate as much public outcry as a gaming console having DRM or mandatory online check-in requirements.

Like I've before, when the aliens dig up our civilization and study it...it wont be hard to tell the story of why.

This ... make them work 10 hrs / day , 6 days / week laying roads , planting trees ect. I would also fine criminal's ( not just drug arrests ) . As far as food , give them seeds and plant there own garden .

It's inevitable.

The wheels of change are already in motion.

Holder to call for scaled-back mandatory minimum sentences - CNN.com

This is really good news, but with Holder, actions will speak louder than words. Mandatory mininums are garbage and part of the problem with the justice system. The application of how laws are enforced is the the next step imo, the enforcement is based on race and a word we never use but certainly should more often, class.

Holder, imo, has probably been the worst of the entire Obama administration. He's been a really horrible Attorny General. Lying, inconsistent, and def not transparent with his department's actions.

Its good to see some leadership on such a tough issue, but we need to do more. This is a good first step.

Mandatory minimums really need to go the way of the dinosaurs.

Well, he's only doing what the President is instructing him to do. His boss is also full of lies and def not transparent with his administration's actions.
