USC Pro Day Results and Notes:

There are a lot of high profile guys here, so I figured posts for each of the standouts in its own thread made sense then getting this lot in the KFFL thread.

NFL | R. Bush works out at Pro Day
Sun, 2 Apr 2006 15:22:53 -0700

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports USC RB Reggie Bush measured a height of 5-11 and a weight of 202 pounds at his Pro Day. He ran the 40-yard dash with a time of 4.33 seconds, but the times were measured electronically which historically adds about .08 seconds to his time. He measured a 10-foot-9 long jump and a 40 1/2-inch vertical jump.

Sun, 2 Apr 2006 19:09:22 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports USC RB Reggie Bush posted an eye-opening 40-inch vertical jump, performed a very solid 24 repetitions on the standard 225-pound bench press, and was clocked in the 40-yard sprint in 4.37-4.41 seconds, according to a few scouts attending his Pro Day workout Sunday, April 2. The electronic times for Bush were a little quicker, in the 4.33-4.37 range. "Probably not the absolute perfect day that everybody wants to have at one of these things," Bush told ESPN.com after the nearly four hours of drills. "But I felt good. I feel like I came in here today as the No. 1 guy, and I think I'm leaving the same way. So, in that sense, it's pretty satisfying. Now I can kick back and go to the beach for a few days. For me, well, I think I'm walking out of here a winner for the day."

Texans | Team will visit with R. Bush Thursday
Sun, 2 Apr 2006 19:14:04 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports USC RB Reggie Bush will meet with Houston Texans officials Thursday, April 6. As part of a full day of activities, Bush's agent, Joel Segal, will huddle with Dan Ferens, who handles the Texans' contract negotiations. Because they hold the top pick in the April 29 NFL Draft, the Texans may commence contract negotiations at any point. Bush will not do any on-field drills during his visit with the Texans.

Texans | Team will visit with V. Young Friday
Sun, 2 Apr 2006 19:17:28 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports Texas QB Vince Young will meet with Houston Texans officials Friday, April 7. Young will perform on-field drills for the Texans staff during his visit.

Bush's last known time was 4.45, so a 4.4 helps keep him on top. A 40" vert is really good as are 24 reps for a speed back. This year is really odd in that the 2 best receiving options are a running back and a tight end... In that sense, maybe Bush really is the best choice for the Texans since he could draw double and triple teams acting as both a RB an WR, which not only helps Andre Johnson but also makes the oline look better. Since the Texans already have a Pro Bowl KR guy, hopefully they don't waste a lot of touches there. That way Bush can be 100% for what was a truly craptastic offense last year.

sidenote: in this case it seems the electronic sensors add time as in making the time better (because the reaction time for hitting start/stop buttons doesn't exist).

Re: USC Pro Day Results and Notes:

NFL | M. Leinart a limited participant at Pro Day
Sun, 2 Apr 2006 15:07:59 -0700

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports USC QB Matt Leinart measured 6-5 5/8 and weighed 224 pounds at his Pro Day workout Sunday, April 2. Leinart had a 9-foot-6 long jump and a 37-inch vertical jump.

Sun, 2 Apr 2006 19:12:18 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports USC QB Matt Leinart displayed some athleticism by turning in a 37-inch vertical jump at his Pro Day Sunday, April 2. He completed 36 of 45 passes by unofficial count, with three drops by his receivers. His accuracy was good, not great, and his arm strength was adequate. It appeared, at times, that he aimed the ball a bit too much and some balls sailed on him. Leinart conceded afterwards that he probably pressed a little. "In situations like these," Leinart said, "I think you tend to overdo it. You know, you try to throw a ball too hard, and it goes high, or you try to be too fine with your passes. I think I started off too tight."

QB with a 37" vert... Leinhart didn't do much to help himself, but I doubt an off day is going to hurt his stock much after the college career he's had.

Re: USC Pro Day Results and Notes:

NFL | W. Justice a limited participant at Pro Day
Sun, 2 Apr 2006 15:10:39 -0700

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports USC OT Winston Justice measured 6-6 and weighed 320 pounds at his Pro Day workout Sunday, April 2. Justice had a 34-inch arm length, 39-inch vertical jump, and 38 lifts.

NFL | More on W. Justice's Pro Day results

Sun, 2 Apr 2006 19:09:47 -0700

ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports USC OT Winston Justice, who still must resolve some old character issues for NFL scouts before the NFL Draft, was the player who inarguably helped himself the most at his Pro Day Sunday, April 2. In the vertical jump, Justice did 39 inches, an incredible mark for such a big man. He registered 38 "repetitions" in the bench press. Justice pulled up toward the end of the 40-yard drill, clutching his right hamstring, but one AFC scout still said he clocked him at 5.03 seconds. In the pass-block drills, Justice looked very agile and naturally athletic, despite the sore hamstring. "Happy with what I did and happy it's over," said Justice, who missed time during his career because of two off-field incidents, one of which included pulling a pellet gun on a USC student. "We'll just have to see where it goes from here."

Jutice is the big winner of the USC Pro Day doing a 39" vert and 38 lifts with a pretty good 40 time and solid drill work. It looks like two very solid tackles are coming in to the NFL this year (though D'Brick has absolutely zero character issues, unlike Justice). Jutice's numbers are actually better than DB's, but don't mistake numbers for football skill

Re: USC Pro Day Results and Notes:

NFL | F. Matua Pro Day results
Sun, 2 Apr 2006 15:03:26 -0700

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports USC OG Fred Matua measured 6-2 3/8 and weighed 301 pounds at his Pro Day workout Sunday, April 2. (He ran his 40s in 5.06 and 5.19. For a guy over 300 pounds to run a 40-yard dash in a theoretical time under five seconds, he should shoot up draft boards.)** He also had a 30-inch vertical and 26 lifts. All 40-yard dash times were clocked electronically, which historically adds about .08 of a second to the actual time.

I don't know why someone decided to editorialize inside a KFFL news blurb, but some OL guys (like chris chester) can run sub 4.9 (4.83) at 300lbs (and chris might not even be drafted until round 4 even though he can play C, OG, and TE). Speed is nothing without solid football skills, and Matua is still quite solidly in the #6 OG spot this year (round 3-4).

**Also i believe the sensor REDUCES time (no human reaction time unlike with stopwatches), making the 40 times better by .08 seconds instead of worse, so the part in parentheses is probably wrong.

Re: USC Pro Day Results and Notes:

NFL | T. Lutui Pro Day results
Sun, 2 Apr 2006 15:06:46 -0700

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports USC OT Taitusi Lutui measured 6-3 and weighed 330 pounds at his Pro Day workout Sunday, April 2. He ran his 40s in 5.42 and 5.33. Had am 8-foot-6 long jump, 32-inch vertical jump, and 26 lifts. All 40-yard dash times were clocked electronically, which historically adds about .08 of a second to the actual time.

Lutui didn't do anything to hurt his stock, though he is a bit slow and listed as an OG on most draft boards (a top 3-4 OG that should be gone in round 2).

Re: USC Pro Day Results and Notes:

NFL | Byrd works out at Pro Day
Sun, 2 Apr 2006 15:23:06 -0700

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports USC TE Dominique Byrd measured a height of 6-2 7/8 and a weight of 258 pounds at his Pro Day. He ran the 40-yard dash with times of 4.81 seconds and 4.79 seconds, but the times were measured electronically which historically adds about .08 seconds to his times. He measured a 36 1/2-inch vertical jump and completed 16 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press.

rotten time, terrible rep number (even M lewis, who's considered pretty weak, put up 22, pope and davis put up 32 and 33 respectively), but he'll still be a day 1 pick.

NFL | Bing works out at Pro Day
Sun, 2 Apr 2006 15:21:30 -0700

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports USC S Darnell Bing measured a height of 6-1 3/4 and a weight of 225 pounds at his Pro Day. He ran the 40-yard dash with times of 4.63 seconds and 4.53 seconds, but the times were measured electronically which historically adds about .08 seconds to his times. He measured a 10-foot-5 long jump and a 38-inch vertical jump while completing 21 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press.

This Pro Day helped him, even though his speed wasn't that great. He'll be gone in the early 2nd round.

Re: USC Pro Day Results and Notes:

NFL | Buchanon works out at Pro Day
Sun, 2 Apr 2006 15:21:43 -0700

Gil Brandt, of NFL.com, reports USC WR William Buchanon measured a height of 6-3 and a weight of 191 pounds at his Pro Day. He ran the 40-yard dash twice with times of 4.38 seconds, but the times were measured electronically which historically adds about .08 seconds to his times. He also measured a 40-inch vertical jump.

Good time for a 6'3" guy and a great vert too. This really helps him, but he did nothing in college, so he'll probably be undrafted and might not make it out of training camp.

Re: USC Pro Day Results and Notes:

NFL | L. White feeling hamstrung
Mon, 3 Apr 2006 05:11:11 -0700

Bill Williamson, of the Denver Post, reports USC RB LenDale White (hamstring) has heard the murmurs about what NFL scouts thought of his work ethic and he was out to change the perception at his Pro Day Sunday, April 2. However, a nagging hamstring injury put his plans on hold. White's uncle, Herman White, said LenDale tweaked his hamstring during a bench-press drill and was unable to continue the workout. "LenDale is devastated," Herman White said. "He was out to show what a worker he is and how well he can do all these things people questioned about him. But he had to scratch. He knows there's a perception out there. Hopefully, this doesn't continue it." White will now hold a private workout the weekend before the NFL Draft, his uncle said. Some NFL scouts believe White's weight and spring inactivity could drop him in the April 29-30 NFL Draft.

NFL | L. White draws mixed reviews
Mon, 3 Apr 2006 05:23:34 -0700

Billy Witz, of the Los Angeles Daily News, reports USC RB LenDale White left some scouts with mixed impressions after his Pro Day Sunday, April 2. As noted earlier, a sore hamstring prevented White from running the 40-yard dash and all he did was the bench press. He did raise some red flags by looking out of shape. White weighed in at 244 pounds. White said he was disappointed he couldn't run or participate in receiving drills, and said he played between 235 and 240 this season. "I don't know how GMs view me," White said. "But if they know football, they know I can play football. Hopefully, I'll prove anyone who has doubts about me wrong." "I'm disappointed to see him not compete," said Tony Softli, the Carolina Panthers' director of college scouting. "I'd like to see him healthy and in his best shape, but then you've got to look at his DNA - his film. That tells you best." Another scout was more critical: "We all know he's a game-day player, but his attitude was nonchalant. He's got this sense of entitlement - he just doesn't get it."

NFL | L. White being compared to Clarett
Mon, 3 Apr 2006 18:35:14 -0700

Jason Cole, writing for NBCSports.com, reports USC RB LenDale White is being mentioned in the same company as free agent RB Maurice Clarett. An NFL exeutive said, "We had one of our scouts go up and ask him what was going on (after White didn't run). The kid said his hamstring was tight or something like that. Then we tried to find out when he was going to run and he didn't know. It didn't even sound like he was going to run. What does this kid think?" A former USC offensive player who once was a teammate of White's said, "The guy can play, but he just gets by. He coasted in practice and he coasted in the offseason. He came in thinking he just had to put in his time and that's what you see now." The teammate added that the things White was able to do was because he played next to RB Reggie Bush and the other guys around him. He added that White would be amazing if he really worked at it.

NFL | L. White trying to keep covered

Mon, 3 Apr 2006 18:34:44 -0700

Jason Cole, writing for NBCSports.com, reports USC RB LenDale White wore a loose-fitting warm-up suit during his Pro Day in an effort to not show much of his body. He drew audible groans from NFL scouts at the NFL Combine when he showed his chest. After seeing White at the NFL Combine, one NFL general manager said, "The guy needed a bra, it was ridiculous. You come to the combine looking like that and you want to be a first-round pick? Come on. The guy had obviously been doing nothing."

Broncos | L. White has dinner with team
Mon, 3 Apr 2006 18:34:29 -0700

Jason Cole, writing for NBCSports.com, reports USC RB LenDale White had dinner with the Denver Broncos Saturday, April 2.

Now that's pretty damning. Looks like he's in a free fall and, of course, denver will be there to pick him up.
