Evening at the Quake: The Top 3 2008 Pre-Combine Draft Prospects

With the Combine just a few weeks away I thought I would do a pre combine ranking, and after the draft I will do each position every Friday. (If you all like this one)

1. Glenn Dorsey Defensive Tackle, LSU
If there is anything that can be counted as a sure thing in this seasons draft it is Big Dorsey. Standing at 6'2" and weighing in at 303 pounds Dorsey is a force to be reckoned with. With the ability to push blockers into the backfield and stop the run and exceptional closing speed in his pass rushing, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to see why Dorsey is a big candidate to be the number one overall draft pick. A 2 time All-American (2006,2007) and finished 9th in the Heisman voting in 2007 as well as being awarded the Brongo Nagurski Trophy, the Outland Trophy, The lott trophy, and the Lombardi award becoming the first player to recieve all four awards not to mention the fact that he anchored the defense in LSU's National season of 2007.

2. Jake Long Offensive Tackle, Michigan
The big tackle coming from Wolverine land would have been a top selection in 2006 had he come out, but he choose to go back to school for his senior season and enjoyed a strong season. Built in the same mold as Jake Thomas from the season before, Long is regarded as the top offensive lineman in this years draft. A mammoth of a human being standing at 6'7" and weighing 315 pounds with a mean streak to boot Long will be the cornerstone of a NFL offensive line for 10-12 years. An excellent pass blocker with quick and agile feet Long has the ability to deal with the speed rushers of the NFL as well as the strength to counter power pass rushers as well.

3. Darren McFadden Running Back, Arkansas
What is there left to say about this spectacular back out of the SEC. (Ask the defenses of LSU and South Carolina) McFadden has the speed to run by defenders, the power to run them over and the moves to make them look silly. He is an average reciever out of the backfield and a decent blocker. He has spearheaded the Hogs offensive attack for years and has been the runner-up in the Heisman voting for the last two seasons and standing at 6'2" and weighing in 215 pounds he is the prototypical running back and is reminding some people of Adrian Peterson of last season. (he turned out pretty good I think)

The top end of this draft looks really good, and you can throw Chris Long right into that pile.

Those who want to improve their passing games...look elsewhere. Terrible receiver class, and no QB prospects to die for.

There is some depth at the QB class, as up to 5 of these guys could emerge as NFL starters, but there's only two guys worthy of a first round grade...and knowing the media, neither of them will get it.

I'm talking about Brian Brohm and Andre Woodson. Matt Ryan is going to get the media love, but he's not a great prospect (nor is he as bad as Russell was last year). He wasn't even on the scouting radar before BC started 8-0, and that's usually a bad sign.

To think, my first ever post was on how I thought Russel was gonna be an overrated player. Those were the days...

Re: Evening at the Quake: The Top 3 2008 Pre-Combine Draft Prospects

henne's probably the steal at QB. cromartie at CB, phillips at S.

ellis and dorsey, long and long, and mcfadden are all great nfl starter types too.

I imagine gholston and harvey will end up being good DEs or OLBs (in a 3-4).

at WR, i still like jackson, but the WR corp is really just a bunch of possible #2s (the other jackson, bowman, caldwell, hall, etc).

justin king might be a good late round cb... haven't seen enough video though.

Chris Long is the BEST PLAYER IN THE 2007 DRAFT. And that's not just the UVa alum in me talking. I watched him play all year and the dude is straight up incredible. He is absolutely relentless, fought double and triple teams, beat teams even when the game planned specifically for him and when he was the only truly great player on his team (how many 1st rounders coming out of UVa? Compare that to LSU). He is explosive, can play end in either a 4-3 or 3-4 (as he did in college, but I think he'd be better as a true pass rusher in a 4-3 ...) Can we get some YouTube on this guy? He's an animal!

I also think Henne is a better prospect than Ryan. You can't teach 4 years of experience in the big ten.

Henne was never an elite college player though, and that may affect his ability to ever get a chance to play. If he does though, I expect him to shine.
