Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft

Hearing him calling himself an entertainer and an icon makes me very nervous about the prospect of drafting him. When he says that I'm reminded of Charles Rogers Lamborghini Living. Sure it's great that he's going to work out at the combine, but between his "father's" pay to play scheme and wowing media types at a preview of his workout. Well safe to say I feel like he's exponentially more concerned with his payday then he is having a successful career. Or put another way, I feel like his combine and media workout isn't a competitive thing/being the best player he can be type thing but rather a "if I do this I can increase my draft stock enough to get a big pay day" type motive.

I know I've been supportive of him but I can't stop picturing him having a Vegas post-draft party a la Ryan Leaf after these comments.

Jason Reid - Given the Redskins' needs, drafting a quarterback would be indefensible

To take a guy 1st overall, who's played one year in a non pro style offense, that was in shotgun 99% of the time, who's favorite play was to just run the ball up the middle is just ridiculous.

It is concerning and may not be a deal breaker, but these things are RED FLAGS in my mind....

Definitely red flags.

You want your QB to be confident but this kid is sounding flat out cocky. I don't like it.

The 2011 QB class: They all have flaws but at least one is likely to be selected in the top ten. One or two more will probably be chosen later in the round. There is a slight possibility that all could be passed in round one while teams fill other needs.

jmo\ but, I don't think there is a QB in the 2011 draft worthy of a top ten selection.

This guy sounds awfully full of himself for only playing one season of college ball. Let someone else reach for this guy. I hope we don't.

Sure the opening quote of that article isn't good & does scare me, the other quotes he made were astute & pretty mature. I won't read too much into it unless he continues to talk like that or worse.

Quarterback class may not have an immediate starter | ProFootballTalk

Quote:
Where is that one impact, immediate starter?” an AFC personnel exec recently told Tom Pelissero of 1500espn.com. “That’s what NFL teams are trying to figure out. There may not be right now a walk-in-the-door, first-day starting quarterback that’s in the draft.”
Quote:
Pelissero explains that two of the top quarterbacks — Cam Newton and Blaine Gabbert — played in spread offenses at college, making it harder to determine whether they’ll quickly be able to pick up a pro-style offense right away. Ryan Mallett played in an offense more suited to the pro game, but he is being dogged by concerns regarding leadership and off-field concerns. Jake Locker, once presumed to be the darling of the 2011 class, has sputtered.

The Redskins might be better served looking to round 2 and taking either Ponder or Dalton, especially since whoever we take most likely won't start next year anyway. Might as well get someone to develope into the system to replace Grossman.

Re: ESPN Say's Newton To Enter Draft

Carolina's owner is a cheapskate, a #1 QB is going to cost a lot of $$ that he probably doesn't want to spend.

He's not even 1st-round quality. I'm not denying he won't go in the 1st-round...but he shouldn't.
